So Santy bought me a lovely new smart TV for Christmas. It's a Samsung UE40JU6445K. Now the first thing I found was that my old Lidle satellite receiver is not going to work, no HDMI for a start!

So what would folks recommend. Here are some of the things I am after and a constraint.

Firstly the constraint. I live in a new build house that is pretty much airtight so all services were installed before the airtightness was completed. I had two cables installed for future TV requirements from the garage where the sat dish is mounted. I really do not want to have to punch further holes in the house and there is no other way of getting more cables in.

I have wireless router for the internet in the house.

I would like a system that gets me the usual FTA UK channels.
I would like to be able to get Saorview/Saorsat and some point in the future.
I would like to be able to record programmes (if possible while watching others.)
I would like to be able to record up to a week in advance.

Now from my research on Boards it seems that if I want to record a programme from UK freesat while watching another UK freesat programme this means two cables from the dish. And if I want to be able to watch something on Saorview/Saorsat while recording something from the UK freesat

So what setup would you recommend and what receiver would be the best at this point in time. (The Edision Optimus seem to get favourable reviews on here but which model is currently the highest recommended. Or should I be looking at something else altogether.)

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Joe

You can use the yellow/red/white composite video + audio L/R connectors for the Lidl satellite box, until you get sorted with something else. (Might need a SCART to phono/RCA adapter, depending on model, & of course the relevant cable.)

2 cables from dish & aerial to TV point is plenty, as the terrestrial signal can be diplexed with the satellite signal, sharing a cable.

Saorsat is really only for those who aren't covered by the Saorview network: a last resort that doesn't carry TV3, 3e, or UTV Ireland, & offers no quality advantage over Saorview for the services it does carry.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'll try that in the meantime.

I'd still be interested in suggestions of the type of box to get.

    .

OK so I tried with the composite video cable and there is nothing on the TV (I tried my old TV which works with the scart). Then I noticed something really weird. Your original message does not show what you said in brackets. But when I click in the reply button it's there! Not sure why that is. Anyway I'm off in to Maplins in Limerick now so I'll see if they have the SCART to phone adapter.

Then I'll have to see if I can suss out which connectors to use on the telly. There are five altogether. A yellow/green one labelled Y/Video which I assume is to be used. Then a White labelled Pb and a Red labelled Rr. Then another White and Red for audio labelled L and R. Any suggestions on which way round I connect all of these?

    Thanks again.

There's a Saorview box on the way, that uses Freesat's smart TV guide.

Now, to the best of my knowledge, it hasn't been confirmed that it will integrate the UK channels via satellite, but you'd have to question the viability of such a product if it didn't.

I think I'd be waiting to see what unfolds here, hopefully more will be known over the coming weeks.

Bit in brackets had now re-appeared in your first message but I noticed that you edited it so I guess you just added that extra helpful advice after I first read the reply. Thanks.

So the Lidl receiver actually has the yellow/red/white outputs? Try going into (hopefully) Menu - System Setup - TV System, & check that the video output is set to CVBS.

On the new TV, the yellow connector will go to Y/Video, & the red & white to the audio L/R.

Ok I'll do that. I've attached a photo of the back of the Lidle box.

Can you tell me any more about this or where I can find any information? Thanks

A saorview / Freesat combo box (a official one) would be a great product for Irish viewers

    Let's hope it happens.

Nothing official announced yet, newspaper article on it from early Nov and a contract awarded to Freesat last summer
