How to remove cables from conduit

    Hi,

I am trying to remove two unused co-ax cables from a conduit, to make room for a satellite cable. (I think they were originally intended to relay satellite signal from the living room to the attic and down to other rooms. Anyway, not needed now.)

The attached pics show both the room and attic ends of the cables; there are three co-ax and one phone extension cable in the conduit. At the attic end the cables seem to come from the conduit in the wall at right-angles through two 2"x 9" joists.
The problem I have is I cannot get any movement on them. Not that surprising given the conduit is packed, and the angle at the top.
Anyone got any tips on how I can remove the unused cables?

Alternatively, could I use one of the co-ax cables to carry the satellite signal down to the room?
To complicate things a little further, I don't know which of the three cables at the attic end is the one carrying the saorview signal; they are coming from the other end of the house.

I know I could just bring the satellite cable through the ceiling, and down the wall, but it would look very untidy, and is not really an option.

    Thanks.

    John

Your second attachment, the room end isn't opening for me.

Why do you want to remove the existing spare cabling? Looking at the first pic the cable appears to be standard black co-ax installed in recent times (RG6?, any identifying markings on the cable) and not low quality brown cable. And better still you have the necessary 2 cables to feed a satellite PVR (twin tuner) plus Saorview cable.

I would use these cables to feed the sat signal to the main room but hopefully you haven't damaged the cables trying to remove them.

I assume you're going to cut into the existing cabling in the attic to feed the sat signal, if you can't trace the Saorview cable back to the aerial I would cut 1 cable and check the TV each time for loss of Saorview signal, marking the cable once identified and rejoining with F-connector and joiner, you might be lucky and cut the 2 spare cables first.

Time to get your multi meter out to trace which is which if you can't get them out of the conduit ---also to establish that they are still intact if a lot of pulling has taken place trying to remove them.
Having spent a fair bit of my working life installing juke boxes in pubs, sometimes using other installers cables, don't assume these are still good cables.
If you do manage to free one use it as a pull through for the new cable by soldering the new cable to it before starting to gently pull.

I intended to run a straight cable from the LNB through the attic wall and down to the room; the dish is outside the same wall that cables run down.
I did not think I could use the existing co-ax cable; thought is had to be satellite cable.
It is relatively new, < 10 years.

    Thanks for info.
