    Not sure.
Did you lock car and then reopen it and try it.
    Could be immobilizer

Is there plenty of petrol in it? Have you a 2nd key you can try? Is the engine actually turning over?

is there an immobiliser light that normally goes off staying on ?

Do you have a big bunch of keys on you car key
I've found that a big bunch of keys will swing from the barrel and cause issues as a car gets older , you should really have your car key separate and just on a bit of string.
As the other poster said lock the car in lock it and try again if that fails
Then disconnect the battery re connect it lock unlock the car and try again

stupid one maybe but did u check all fuses ? had a blown fuel pump fuse before that caused my car not to start

check fuses for pump as posted
    old school then
do you have a plug spanner
turn her over a few times then pull a plug
if it it isn't wet and dosent smell of petrol its a fuel issue
if it does then stick it into its lead and check for a spark
    i doubt its air
post a picture of one of the plugs if you can get one out and tell us if it was wet and smelled of petrol

When you turn on the ignition can you hear the fuel pump running for a few seconds?

It could be a fuel pump issue (common), a crankshaft sensor issue causing a no spark no start situation. No spark can be confirmed by removing a spar plug HT lead, putting a spare plug into it and grounding it on the block and cranking the engine over. You should have a strong blue regular spark. As mentioned, operation of the fuel pump priming should be heard when you turn ignition key to position 2, like a whir from the back seat. After that youre in the realms of guesswork without a few tools to hand.

My daughter had a Golf that would not start. Turned out she had the heated rear window switched on and it started no bother when she turned it off.
