Temporary Lay-off Benefits Vs No Benefits

    Hi all,

I have been temporarily laid off from work for a short duration which may last 3-4 months, or perhaps less. Prior to this contract I worked in the UK. I believe I have accrued ample PRSI between the two states to be entitled for JSB.

As I will laid off for a period of time with high likelihood of returning to my job I'm a considering doing voluntary farm work. This entails working gratis but receiving free bed and board. I might do this for one month or more depending on how things go with regards to my previous employer.

Is it possible to volunteer while on JSB, or are you not then technically available for work?
Am I right in thinking you're social welfare is only paid out from one post office, and that this must be collected once per week?

    Thanks in advance.

Your payment is from one post office and must be collected each week. You can apply to take part in voluntary work whilst on a sw payment but its unlikely that farm work would be given the ok for voluntary work. In order for you to receive jsb rather than jsa your contribution history from the uk will have to be requested. The reply from the uk authorities can take a considerable amount of time so just be aware of this.

    Thanks, that's really useful.

The type of work I'd be doing is small holding organic type farming. With free bed and board the plan for financial support would be to cover the cost of my rental accommodation till work starts again. I may just have to bite the bullet and use savings to cover rent until work starts again or I have to search for another job.
