As the title says! Looking for a new TV in the sales online but we have a sky box to connect into it via scart lead and none of the ones I looked at say they have a scart port, is this really old fashioned these days? I know nothing of such things and the husband knows even less, just wanna plug the skybox in and go!

Most new TV's will not have SCART, does your Sky Box have an hdmi port?

No, tv's nowadays do not come with a scart port most of the time.

Sky boxes should have HDMI these days though!

Most of the Sonys have the scart connection, even the 4K's.

If your sky box doesn't have a HDMI port, I'd assume that you're well out of contract with them. Get them on the phone, get a new box with a new reduced contract and that should HDMI to any new TV you can buy

You could just purchase a HDMI to scart adaptor cable ?

Would be strange if they didn't have some kind of analogue AV input, maybe even a proprietary socket that will use an adapter to connect to SCART.

That's if you actually need it of course, as others have pointed out re. HDMI.

If you like throwing money away...HDMI is digital, scart is analogue, it's just not possible for a cable to fix that

You've got an old sky box. You're mad to still use scart, the quality is so bad. Just call sky, get a brand new box with all cables included. Also buy a nice hd or QHD tv

There are boxes available which convert the analogue scart signal to digital. Hdmi goes cable goes in one side and scart cable goes out the other. It's not ideal as picture quality will probably suffer but could be a solution for the op.

They rarely work. I challenge you to show me a reputable branded one from a proper manufacturer and not cheapo nasty chinese crap. The reason I ask is that you won't find one, HDMI has a HDMI and HDCP handshake where the source device and the display negotiate and exchange packets before transferring any info.

Most new tvs have at at least one scart connector, however some come with a convertor cable to scart connection so may not be visible in the picture as there are approx a 3.5 m hole on back or side of tv.

I've never actually used one to be honest so I'll take your word for it. Just thought it might be something for the op to try. Their best option is to forget about scart and go with hdmi direct from device to TV.

A huge amount of people use scart simply because they dont know the box the have has a HDMI connector. They get a new box and just connect the scart like their last one and away they go.

Ermmmm no clue what a hdmi thingy is, my sky plus box is about 8 years old, maybe more, but I don't want to have to pay sky for another one! How do I know if box has a hdmi thing?

It will have a connection on the back that will accept a lead like this, normally it will be labelled HDMI...

Yes it's exactly like the scart lead setup, the lead goes from connection on sky box to same connection on TV.

You won't have to pay as you're definitely out of contract. Maybe they could get you a better deal than you're on now.. Give them a ring ;)

For non-HD channels there is no difference between SCART (using the RGB pins) and HDMI. Before I upgraded to the Horizon box I had an old UPC box which used SCART to connect to a 42" HD TV and the picture quality was top notch, if not quite HD. I didn't notice any difference in picture quality (still don't) with the non-HD channels when I upgraded to Horizon and HDMI.

So if the OP wants the HD channels then by all means let him get a new Sky box but otherwise he will be fine staying with his existing box if he can find a TV with a SCART connector.

Agree 100% with the poster who says that HDMI to SCART converters (or worse, so-called 'adapter cables') are a complete con.

Even better way to do it is to ring them and tell them to cut you off and wait to see what they offer you...they don't like losing customers after 8 years:) I think a new box is the minimum they'll offer you.

This response is a bit late but you should be calling sky every year as soon as your minimum term expires (I actually call them during month 11) to get your "loyalty" deal re-enabled. This is where you tell them you need a new box - you should have had several updates at this stage but probably not necessary if you've never had a HDTV. I'm currently paying £16.50 per month for the variety/family bundle with box sets, I'll never ever be paying the full £39, just not worth it.

Just wanted to say thanks for heads up on this, I contacted Sky and am getting a new HD box and they're reconditioning my current plus box for my second tv free of charge, plus it turns out they've stopped charging a fee for multiroom without a phone line, so my monthly charge has gone down so I'm quite delighted!
