hi can anyone tell me if the odd smell of gas is acceptable when a gas heating system is on?
It's like the odd waft of gas will hit you in the face, is the thing gonna blow up or is it normal? I've had to argue that a carbon monoxide alarm won't detect gas and I'm pretty sure their smoke alarm is just a smoke alarm too, do I just leave it is it a functioning quirk? it's not like a leak it's just the odd burp of smelly gas????

Not normal, call the gas board to have a look at it.

    Where is the boiler located?
Are you getting the smell from around the boiler casing area?
Are you getting the smell from the end of the flue outside?
Is it only as the boiler is starting?

Based on what you have said, you must contact an RGI and have your appliances checked for safety.
