Can I use heavier oil to make my engine last ?

I have a honda gx160 engine that's burning oil like mad , probably putting a cup a day into it now and if it's hot and the engine is on a slope it will cut out cos the oil is thin and must be gone away from the low oil sensor and she cuts out .
I'm putting 15w40 in it now but I wouldn't mind if I could put oil that wouldn't burn as smokey / much in it . I will be getting a new engine in a couple of weeks so I don't mind if it's not the recommended stuff just if it keeps it going a bit better for me for the next couple of weeks
    Thanks

Is that a motorcycle engine? Yes you can use a thicker oil but t won't help much as once it gets up to temperature it'll burn like the thinner stuff.

If it's as bad as you say throw in a little Bardahl stop leak or some such stuff. Not as much as you would a car obviously.

Engine is knackered, I guess like most owners of the GX160 you never gave it a proper oil change?
They only hold 600ml from empty so a cup is roughly 200ml.
Spec calls for 10w40 but if yours is that bad maybe some SAE 30 oil for a Briggs and Stratton might be worth a go.
If it only has to last another couple of weeks its not going to matter
Is it a Genset or a Powerpack?

Thanks CJ I'm afraid I'm not your stereotypical GX160 owner , I only bought it a few weeks ago and changed the oil straight away but it burnt it again after a good few days work out and started to get heavier after that .
It was too close to Christmas to stop using it but I intend to replace it with a GX200. And I'll keep the oil changed regularly in the new one !
It's in a tracked mini dumper

These are simple engines, they use oil by either worn/broken rings or valve guides.
Some models have an intake seal on the valve guide but not all, there are many different variations of the GX160!
Its a pretty simple engine to strip down so when you get your new one, strip the old one and see what has happened and if its repairable.
The valve guides are replaceable but realistically its not really worth it.

Ya it's a pity to throw out the old engine cos it's still working fine apart from poisoning me with smoke , it starts on the first pull and seems to be powering the yoke the finest but I'm not much use tinkering at that stuff . I might get someone to look at it

Chuck in 50% of this stuff. I've used in lots of engines that liked burning oil, and they run fine with it in and the oil-burning eases - often dramatically. Herselfs avensis burnt oil for sport (vvti, they almost all do)- I now throw in a full bottle at every oil change and the oil consumption has been slashed - before, it drank the oil, stinking out the cabin with fumes - now it holds steady enough to be more than live-able with and no fumes at all.

As CJh' pointed out the engine holds 600ml so I wouldn't be putting in anywhere near half a bottle, about 100mls at most.

I meant half the engines capacity - so 300ml. ;) They run like a top on it. We use it in genny-welders that have mega-hours done.
