Confused between 4k and Smart

Comments

A Smart Tv lets you access Internet TV functions such as Netflix, Youtube and TV stations catch-up services (though in Ireland the last one can be limited) a 4k tv shows pictures at a higher resolution (4000 pixels per square inch) then your standard high definition television (1080 pixels per square inch)

    This too shall pass.

    Hi all.

I've about a grand to spend on a new TV. Looking for a 55 inch,

But what's the difference between 4k and smart non 4k.

    I saw these as candidates

    http://www.harveynorman.ie/tvs-headphones/hd-tvs/sony-55-led-tv-kd55x8509cbu.html

    http://www.harveynorman.ie/tvs-headphones/hd-tvs/samsung-55-led-tv-ue55j6300akxxu.html

Would all TVs come with smart tv menus and features?

Any advise would be appreciated! Thanks
Feck all you can watch in 4k.be it Blu ray or online, and no one transmission of 4k.just go for full HD for now, it will be at least 3 years before 4k will catch up and be the new norm.

There's nobody broadcasting in 4K, no game console outputs in 4K either. Your sky box for example only outputs in 1080i not 1080p which is full HD.
Before spending a grand I'd read as many reviews as possible. Depending on where your going to have the TV, the better the black level the better the TV.
LED Tv's or 4K as they call them these days are very bad at giving true colour especially black, by their nature they just can't do it.
Plasma and Oled give a far superior picture but plasma aren't made anymore as they are to expensive to manufacturer and OLED are still quite expensive as its new Technology.

Your eyes are the best judge in Harvey Norman etc, Is they picture too bright, is there gosting in sport etc.

To answer your question the dumbest of TV's can be smart once you add a €40 chrome cast probably even your current TV as long as it has a HD Port.

If I was buying I'd be looking for a newish Panasonic Plasma on Adverts for around 1 or 2k or holding fire for more OLED screens to appear this year.

The curved TV looks the best, but I'd consider getting a high res screen if you plan on keeping it for more than 3 years. The resale value wouldn't be great so you probably want something you can keep using for years, assuming that the upgrade to 4k happens in the forseeable.

it's not pixels per square inch.
4k refers to approx horizontal resolution.
    1080p refers to vertical resolution

    I.e. 4k would be 3840x2160.
    1080p would be 1920x1080

If you could pick up one of those samsungs for 1k you'd be doing ok http://www.whathifi.com/samsung/ue48ju7000/review
The cheapest I can see it online is €1299 from richer sounds.

Thanks for all the replies guys - much apprecaited. I'l skip on the 4K then if its not going to be in mainstream use for some time...

I might drop into Harvey Norman and have a look.

All that aside, I am relatively happy with my 46" Samsung, just looking to go bigger this year. Might it be a good idea to wait for the OLED or would these be big money?

There big money now about 2k, will be more out this year.

With LED Tv's the bigger you go the worse the picture so if your Samsung is ok but feeling a little dumb get a chromecast for €39

I have a chromecast - use it a lot. Just looking to increase the TV size in the room. Have my sights on a 55".

I've always liked the Samsung I have now so thats why I want to stick with the brand.

I find it odd though that a manufacturer can release such scaling price points for the same size TV. I assume the 1K range will still have an impressive picture without any noticable flaws in quality?

I think picture quality on any led screens I've seen is rubbish I'm dissapointed every time I walk into Harvey Normans or any of those as quality has gone backwards not forwards. Hence I was suggesting a newish Panasonic plasma with some warranty left if you can find one, there is no comparison if you go up into the bigger sizes 50,60,65

I've 2 Kuro's, a 5090 in the sitting room and 500a in the kitchen, there old but still nothing on the market compares to them for picture quality except some of those panasonics.
You'll pay for quality though even used, for example http://touch.adverts.ie/tv/plasma-tv-panasonic-viera-55vt60/9234500 and http://touch.adverts.ie/tv/panasonic-tx-p50gt60b/8745300

Kuro's pop up now and again on adverts, a 60 inch would the business if you could get one.

For years I've found in stores that Samsungs invariably seem to have the best picture, with blacker blacks and brighter colours, but it's just a personal view.

Seriously wish TVs like these were still being made, the only thing that could beat them in picture quality would be OLEDs. Absolutely sad that poverty LCDs shoved these out of the market

Euronics stores currently have a good deal on 55 Sony for 1100.

Personally prefer Sony as I find the picture very sharp and sound is unparalleled, I find Samsung and LG sounds a bit hollow to me anyway.

Also if you will be using it as a screen for pc or consoles look at the refresh rate and look for anything above 200hz to future proof a bit. Input lag is also an issue with gaming and Sony's rule the roost here a quick google search will confirm.
Obviously if not a gamer disregard.
And as above stated just go in and have a look

    Hi All,

Sorry again, but I've put a deposit on this

    http://www.harveynorman.ie/tvs-headphones/hd-tvs/sony-55-led-tv-kd55x8509cbu.html

Guy tells me its a great TV - 5 Year warranty, 1,000 hertz, 4K, full android support.

My only concern is the stablity of the stand! It feels quite fragile and I've a Bear Grills 3 year old in the house and the TV is on a regular stand.

Anyone else have one of these generation stands - It seems Sony has this same stand setup on the entire range of TVs. Wereas it will wobble at a touch, I would assume it is built to take a push?! Why bring a huge TV to market if it can be pushed over easily?

    Any advise would be appreciated

€100 cheaper and a 6 year warranty with free delivery...

I'd find some way to mod the stand, heard of a kid in Laois pulled one over on him self and is no more, I've mine screwed down the a large cabinet they couldn't knock if they tried, can you drill the stand or clamp it someday, or wall mount it.

Yeah, you could get wall ties for it to secure it in place and also screw it down into the stand as well, the thing literally wouldn't budge then even if it was kicked

TV manufacturers really need to be more aware about these issues when designing stands anyway, I know TVs 55/60"+ are very big and all but they should make a better effort at making them not wobble or move at all

    Hi,

Its a great TV set - seeing it in action, but the wobbly stand is absolutely an issue with deal with with a toddler.

The guy in the shop recommended a strap system they sell but I've the TV is in a corner at an akward angle to the wall and a glass top TV unit.

Not sure why way to proceed...

Anyone use these strap securing devices? None in stock in Harvey Norman today.

I don't know the technical name for it but basically steel strapping, drill out a hole in it so you can put a bolt into where the wall mount bracket would bolt in, that shouldn't mean any modding to the telly required...then screw the steel straps to the wall behind the telly..

Use this kind of stuff but curl up both ends so one flat against the wall and the other against the back of telly, should be able to get get something similar in any hardware shop, it looks kinda like this probably don't need to be as heavy duty http://catalog2.obo-bettermann.com/catalogue/catalogue.do%3Bjsessionid=0B3E4EC8D06CEC62FDF1DA0453731C9A?favOid=vbs_2345&act=showIO&forward=showProductGroupView&action=showManyProducts&lang=en&catId=VBS

It'd be a cheap and effective way to do it, bolt holes should already be in the back of tv

    Hangar strap

Honestly speaking I'm not that handy to do the above - I might see about the strapping Harvey Norman have as an option. Thanks all the same for the advice, much appreciated.

It's pretty simple, any option you get will require something similar, any friend that knows how to use a drill will have it done in 2minutes. Materials will cost maybe €5, you need 2 bolts that fit in the back of the TV they could already be in the box, and 2 scews for the wall and a bit of that metal stripping.

If you don't have one already http://www.ie.screwfix.com/dewalt-dcd776c2-gb-18v-1-3ah-li-ion-cordless-combi-drill-xr.html

You should end up with something like this http://www.babysafety.ie/babydan-tv-strap-2-pack/
Only made of metal and fixed to the wall..
