looking for some other techniques with a handheld lamp and shooting, alot of the time i go prone with the lamp in one hand and the rifle in the shooting hand, Robert bucknells technique looks the right way but have tried it before and sometimes i can hold it some way steady and other times im all over the place.

I know the way your talking about ,he holds his lamp in his hand pointing out and rests the rifle on his arm, to be honest when he started doing that the lamping gear that is out now was not around so he made do.
Make things easier for yourself lad , get your self these 3 things or a cheaper equivalent

    http://www.sportsden.ie/guns/gun-accessories/rifle-accessories/led-sportlight-150-rechargeable-handheld-light.html

The lamp above is a absolute gift , it is lightweight , super tight beam and is fully rechargeable so need for battery packs.

    http://www.sportsden.ie/guns/gun-accessories/rifle-accessories/night-master-800-turbo-kit.html

The scope mounted torch above is the rolls royce of scope mounted torches, you can get cheaper ones, but this is the most essential part of lamping i feel.Use the hand held lamp for scanning then switch over to the scope mounted lamp when you see eyes, it will keep your 2 hands free.

    http://activehuntingireland.ie/hunting/boggear-bog-pod-camo-legged-devil-tripod#.VoB2gPmLSM8

The tripod above is what i use , it is an excellent job , it is pricey but its really high quality, the rest head moves 360 degrees so if you have the scope mounted torch on and looking through the scope and the target is moving you can track it as its moving , and it is rock steady and fully adjustable to your height.

    http://www.sportsden.ie/led-lenser-h7-2-head-light.html

This is not essential but i like using one , using the head torch for keeping your hands free for getting over gateways and looking for things in your pockets with out making too much fuss .

I would knock shooting prone on the head and get yourself the above gear or similar , you will find yourself getting more confident and relaxed when your taking the shot if your shooting from a steady platform

A couple of alternatives to tikahunters choices.

Get the XSearcher torch kit direct from Dereelight and save about €75, P&P free
A better throw with a flood or tight beam

    http://www.dereelight.com/Xsearch.php
    xsearcher.jpg

Use this to attach the torch to your scope, 1" or 30mm available.
Or search google for "torch scope picatinny mount"
    http://www.dx.com/p/aluminum-alloy-bracket-mount-with-hex-wrench-for-m16-gun-25mm-caliber-47332#.VoEhAdJohCc
    Hunting-30mm-ring-Rifle-scope-mount-adaptor-with-20mm-PICATINNY-weaver-universal-Rail-Free-Shipping-Accessory.jpg

Or get a picatinny rail and screw it to your stock like I have. Seen here with the NM800 torch before I got the XSearcher head fitted.

If your land is even/flat enough then try a 13"-27" bi-pod

I use Quad sticks for stalking and find them the best. Easy to make up a set from green covered aluminium garden sticks from B&Q, Homebase.
Do a google search for instructions
I have use them all over the years, bi-sticks, tri-sticks, tri-sticks with an extra rest attached (see tips section). I find the 1m length quad-sticks the best used kneeling. Easy to carry.

Is there an alixpress/dealextreme equivalent to the xsearcher

Not that I know of and I use DX a lot for mounts.
have a look in the tips section here at a review I did on a cree torch from DX. That torch is not in the same class as a NM 800 or XSearcher.
