    Hi,
My 2007 Qashqai 1.5Diesel needs new engine. I'm kind of reluctant to pay for a 2nd hand one as there is 235000Km on it and I have had some other issues with it.

Just wondering what my best options are.

    Repair and keep

    Repair and sell

Is it possible to sell as it is, and if so who to and what kind of money could I expect to get?

All replies appreciated, I know very little about this stuff. Thanks

What killed it? Depending on the damage it might be possible to rebuilt the engine.

As it stands in it's current condition the car is worth nothing more than scrap value imo.

Its worth a fair whack of cash still imo as they still seem to be a sales dream.
If you can source an engine for reasonable money, it would be worthwhile imo.

You should be able to source another engine for it, its a Renault DCI engine but I am not sure what differences (if any) there are from the Renault branded vehicles.
There should be a few around though.

The basic block and head are fairly ubiquitous but there's a myriad of different power outputs which I assume means different turbos / intercoolers / ancilliaries. Could be a nightmare getting the existing ECU talking with everything if its not the correct spec.

I've no idea what an engine would cost for starters but if it's no more than 2-3k I would replace it and get rid of the car as soon as possible.

not at 235,000km on it , the quasqai's market appeal is predominantly people who know nothing about cars who want a 'jeep' in the driveway. These people are also scared sh*tless that anything with more than 100,000 miles is about to blow up. you probably won't even make back your costs on the engine swap with that mileage on it.

146k miles. Are ya mad. Anything less would be lies for an 07 car.
Car is worth the guts of 7k retail surely when running properly.
Hard to see how you wouldn't get cost of an engine back ?

As above, someone looking for a cheaper Qashqai wouldn't be put off by higher mileage if the price was right.
If it was a Tiida or something you'd say fair enough, bale it into steel nails or werthers original cans ASAP, but Qashqai is worth putting an engine into.

know of some one with similar story

    150k kms engine blew ,

car bought secondhand & 3 weeks out of warranty although well under on milage

bought from main dealer who quoted 8k euro for replacement , eventually haggled some good will to 5k euro

That's for a new engine from a main dealer though

An option depending on budget is scrao it against a new car.
Nissan are offering 4 grand scrappage against a new car.
I cant see anything in the terms about the car needing to be a runner, but it requires a current nct and tax

Op to me the answer to your question heavily depends on whether you like the car and it suits your needs or not. If you want rid of it get a secondhand engine and decent independant mechanic to fit it and sell on the car.

If however you like the car and would be happy to keep it for years get a good independant mechanic to price a new engine up and then replace the likes of the clutch if it's anyway on the way out check over the turbo and obviously put on a new timming belt now suddenly you have a car with a lot of new major components. Keep it well serviced and it's unlikely to cause a whole lot of trouble you might need to change some brake component or shocks or suspension components but none of that will be big money. But then you know the car better than us if the gearbox is in sh!t and there is not a straight pannel on the car and the suspension needs and overhaul then it's just a money pit that's not worth putting the money into. So it would want to be in good condition before you go down the putting a new engine into it road.

If I am not mistaken if there are 235000 kms on it and you replace the engine with a newer one with less miles you still have to sell it as a 235000 km car. You could explain the situation but I think it will be very off putting for most buyers. Rightly or wrongly, it's going to narrow your market right down.

    Thanks for the replies.

The other car in the house is a 04 so had hoped to upgrade that one and keep the qashqai. It looks like my only option is to repair the qashqai and either keep it or sell it on. I would probably sell as there have been some other mechanical issues over last few years.

Availing of a scrappage deal on a new car is not an option financially unfortunately. Ideally I'd sell it as is, but it appears from the replies here that thats not really a viable option as I would only going to get scrap value for it
