    Hi folks.
I have a 07 ford focus with 151K miles. Just went to move it from driveway but it won't move in any gear. I also hear a grinding noise when in gear and also in neutral. The grinding noise stops when I press the clutch pedal. Any ideas what it might be?

How much is a new clutch roughly?

Is it grinding in neutral with the clutch pressed?

    Circa 400 parts and labour

Time for a new gearbox imo, doesn't seem like a release bearing.

No, as soon as I press the clutch it stops.

I'd say the fault is the gearbox alright .

Might get a reconditioned box bought & fitted with a clutch for double that if it isn't a diesel Focus.

Thanks for the replies guys. Stupid question but would a gearbox just go like that? No signs up this point that there was problem.

If it turns out to be the gearbox i'd bet it ran dry of oil which is almost never changed on cars here..

How long had it been parked before you tried to move it?

Only a few hours. Was driving it this morning and had no problems.

Almost certainly a clutch problem. Gearbox will have to be removed, and you will probably find clutch disc has disintegrated, or the centre of it has sheared off. Highly unlikely to be a problem with the gearbox.

Years ago my mother's car somehow sheared all the splines off the hub on one driven wheel, no drive. With the wheel covers off you could see the end of the driveshaft rotating... cheap to fix though.

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.

Got the car back today. Turned out the drive shaft had come loose. Not exactly sure how but thankfully it was nothing too major.

Must be some bad pot holes or it came down off a high curb. Surely the steering would have been pulling one way or another?

No, didn't notice anything. I had the front wheel bearings changed recently and tracking rods on one of them changed also. Not sure if that would have any affect though.
