NHS Choir beat Justin Bieber to secure the UK’s Christmas Number 1

A UK story, but I'm pretty pleased with this.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-35177842

The NHS Choir have beaten Justin Beiber to the UK number one. I haven't ever really cared who got number 1 generally, never mind at Christmas, but think this is nice to see.

A choir of nurses, doctors and other NHS staff have beaten Justin Bieber and X Factor winner Louisa Johnson to the UK's Christmas number one spot.

The Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Choir's song A Bridge Over You topped the chart ahead of Bieber's Love Yourself.

They recorded A Bridge Over You to celebrate the work of the NHS, and all proceeds from the sales will be shared between charities including Carers UK and Mind.

"We are absolutely overwhelmed and couldn't be any happier," they said in a statement released by the Official Charts Company.

"It's a brilliant celebration for the NHS across the country so well done and thank you everyone for downloading and streaming. A massive cheer for the NHS, thank you."

They were neck and neck all week, and Justin Beiber putting out a tweet encouraging his followers to buy the NHS single will no doubt have helped it get to number 1.

I'm not a fan of Beiber, and putting that tweet out will have been good for his profile, but if it helped the NHS single reach number 1 I'm glad of the gesture - although who knows, maybe he knew he'd lose anyway.

Here's the tune itself - it's a mash-up of Cover of Fix You by Coldplay and BOTW by Simon & Garfunkel

I thought the X Factor winner usually gets to no.1?

They only reached number 12 this year I think.

Its not even in the top 10 this year. I doubt we will ever see an X Factor Christmas number one again.

Fair play to him for doing that. Maybe he's not such a dick anymore.

Thank fcuking Christ for that! Is the nightmare finally over or will Simon 'Cnut' Cowell just come up with an even bigger abomination?

He's gotten some stick for doing it - that he just wanted to look good, and that he knew he'd lose anyway, but I'm inclined to agree with you.

Fair play to him. He didn't need to do it, and it had a positive impact either way.

Not to worry though, Bieber secured the Christmas #1 here in Ireland. In fact he's got the entire top three all to himself.

At the risk of being accused of hipsterism I have genuinely never heard one of his songs (knowingly).

Yeah I'm the same, I like all three of those songs in the top 3.

That's surprising, they've been difficult to avoid, especially inside the last four months.

Justin Bieber has a new sound and it's actually quite good. I used to **** all over him but his new album is one of the best albums this year.

I'd prefer to be reading a thread about several large Hells Angels beating Justin with stout timbers and putting him into the care of the NHS..

I guess we can't have it all, can we?

My partner is involved in the selling of tix for Bieber. There are meet & greet tix where you get to take a selfie with him, €1800 a pop is what they cost. Sold like hotcakes, some people have more money than sense.

Bieber is in there 4 times, he re-recorded "All I want for Christmas" with Maria Carey. What a time to be alive.

*puts Led Zep on pause, goes to YouTube and checks out some Bieber. Vomits blood, turns Zeppelin back on.
