Hitachi 50inch smart TV

Santa brought one of the kids a Hitachi 50inch smart TV for her bedroom. First off, we know nothing about smart TVs but thought Santa would bring it since it wasnt to expensive. It was £329 in argos. My child's auntie/god mother put 200 towards it and suggested it so I kind of went along with it because think its money well spent.

One question we have, is there a web browser on this TV for using as a screen for all internet use or can it only be used for the apps that come with it.

We turned it on and even though its connected to the wifi, we can't find where to log onto the internet, not even its own YouTube, Netflix or Facebook apps. As for the TV channels, santa forgot to brong an aerial so can't see if channels are working yet :(

If you don't mind me saying so 50 inch is a whacking great size for a bedroom. Looking at Argos website it has Freeview HD built in so you should get Saorview channels as well as Freeview if you have the right aerial eventually connected up. Have you tried looking at the manual for instructions re internet use?

TBH I was thinking along them lines as well about the size of TV. We wanted a 32-42 inch but the smart TV in Hitachi needed an extra dongle at £25 so decided just to spend the extra £25 again (£50) for the 50inch. One thing that is to her benfit is that her bedroom is 4.5mx4m. However if the size does become a problem, it might just end up hanging on our living room wall lol.

When you say the right aerial eventually connected up, what do you mean ?

Did look at the booklet but getting nowhere with it.

Don't know re internet connectivity but this might help - http://answers.argos.co.uk/answers/1493-en_gb/product/2629881/questions.htm
I'm assuming you live in NI and regarding the aerial, an aerial for Freeview if its getting the signal from the main transmitter at Divis i.e. Belfast should also pick up RTE1/2 and TG4 from the nearby transmitter at Black Mountain. However there will be no HD on these channels and some programmes will be geo-blocked i.e. blanked out e.g. Home and Away on RTE and certain sports. To receive the full Saorview service i.e. RTE1/2 HD and TV3 etc you need a separate aerial possibly with a masthead amplifier although signal is so strong at present that the amplifier may not be required. Hope this info. helps.

No not in the north of Ireland, just the TV was bought up there because daughters aunt lives there. In the west, is it possible that I can pick up both free view and soareview aswell from here.

you dont quote a model no and not on argos site anymore, the smaller version says open browser so onscreen you should see OPERA thats the browser, click on it and away you go.

No Freeview in West of Ireland, a pity, signal wont reach. To get saorview you need an aerial that previously picked up tv3 and tg4.

    say model number

Model is 50inch Hitachi 1080 smart TV bought in Argos.

Found the browser, very slow working it with a remote control. Is it possible to use a wireless keypad with this TV. Another thing, with my daughter watching the likes of prison break online and not on Netflix, is it possible TVs can get viruses like PCs and laptops?

Another con to this TV is it only has one scart incert thou it has a few pros.

Does Anyonr else know the pros and con's to this TV.

Maybe the actual model no. will tell us more as the 50 inch 1080 Smart TV on Argos website is dearer than the one you purchased. The actual model no. should be on the front cover of the manual.

    Like every TV now.

HDMI should be your 1st choice of input but if this isn't possible, I'd imagine this TV would have 'phono' inputs for audio L/R, & composite video, that can be used in place of SCART, or the device you want to connect might output component video.

If there's only 1 scary, what about if I need to put my sky into it and a DVD player.

What outputs do the Sky box & DVD player have?

A Sky HD box will have HDMI-out, as will an upscaling DVD player. If they don't have HDMI, you can always look for the analogue alternatives to SCART mentioned in my previous post.

Handiest thing might be to post pics. of the rear of each, showing the connections available.

Here's the connections available according to Argos website -

    Connectivity:
1 SCART socket, 2 USB ports and 2 HDMI sockets.
    Smart TV.
    Wi-Fi enabled.
    Open browser.
    400 x 400 bracket.

Just wondering if OP has an older Sky box with only a scart connection.

Are these not questions that you ask before you make your purchase?

Most DVD players have a HDMI out but the older SKY boxes are Scart. Just use the scart socket for the SKY connection.
