Got a text from FastFit saying 50% of their full services till end of year. Not much time left! Ends up as €75 for a service for petrol cars 1.6L or lower. I didn't bother noting prices for other cars.

I wonder what's actually included in this service.
if it's just cheap oil and filter and visuals then it's not really half price.

I would prefer the full service. 50% of a service no good.

I can fully service my 1.8 petrol motor for less than 75 quid.

    1. Platinum Spark plugs 40,last about 30,000 miles, just changed them this week.
    2. Gallon of oil 5w30 for 20 (Castrol GTX)
    3. Oil filter 5 euro
    4. Air filter 8 euro

So in between changing the plugs i'd have to do about 5 services at a cost of 33 Quid.
I'm an AXA customer and get these offers on AXA plus, but i'd still prefer to do it my own way, saves me plenty of money.

The cost is mostly labour I reckon, As Colm MCM said it's probably cheap oil.

    The OP says full service?

  • Registered Users Posts: 423 ✭✭sector_000

It's oil, oil filter, air filter, spark plugs... and a "21 point safety check".

The website says pollen filter and fuel filter also... but they have never ever actually done those for any prior services for me before.

While the above is true, its also slightly disingenuous. You're not taking into account the outlay for specific tools here to do the job. Oil filter wrench, axle stands, spark plug wrench, perhaps hydrolic lift.

It's probably safe to assume if the OP is dropping their car to fastfit or wherever for a service, they don't own the above, and the outlay would far outweigh any benefits from the deal

I have no doubts they still make a profit on it!

Look after my own services and would also love to know where I could get castor gtx for €20? . If you have all the tools. fair enough you could service alot cheaper and you know the quality of parts you are using but I still think it's not a bad deal for anyone who just hasn't the knowledge, tools and probably the workplace to service their car. Nothing as bad as halfway through a job and it starts pi##ing rain as it does in our wonderful climate alot. Happy Christmas to all on bargains and a peaceful and prosperous new year

Twice previously I used this crowd in Clarehall and Santry and they attempted to sell me unrequired fixes. This I discovered later on shopping around for these alleged repairs with professionals. Best to use Fast Fiddle only for punctures.

Cork City :D not sure if it was on offer but I was buying the cheap stuff and yer man told me about it being the price it was so I said why not :)

I totally agree with you, didn't factor that in :o

You can get Castrol GTX for €20 in most motor factors.

GTX are the white bottles that are part synthetic. That's why it's cheap

This crowd were featured on Watchdog last month for scamming customers when claiming to have done certain jobs without actually doing them. Plenty of branches too, not just an isolated incident.

I really wouldn't recommend these bargain basement car servicing offers.

Many use cheaper oils which are not suitable for modern engines, especially diesel ones.

The engine oil for my car costs nearly €40 alone and if the correct oil is not used it can cause a lot of damage over time. The cost of a full service kit if I need a fuel filter is €80. I'm definitely not advocating a main dealer for servicing but if you can't do it yourself then find a reliable local independent to do it.

Just to note I'm not a mechanic so not trying to promote my own trade, just speaking from experience

What's a full service? Depending on milage and age some expensive parts need to be replaced as a car gets older, I highly doubt that you'll be getting the manufacturer's full service for €75 from a place that specialises in upselling.

It'll oil and a few filters with several hundred Euro of extra work required.

Is fast for in the UK and Ireland the same company?

4l bottles? Gtx long life 3 for a diesel golf?

Yeah it's a franchise mate. They also use other names but second sherry tonight has lost me on these.

There's a Fastfit across from which I always pop into. Find them very good, have never done a job that wasn't required and in fact if I think something is wrong they will assess and may advise it is nothing or if it is something else.

Do not use this oil for your car. Its dirt and you will ruin your engine. Proper oil should be costing you at least 45 euro per 4/5 litre. Outside my own interim servicing (oil, filters, plugs) I use Atlas Sandyford, they have other branches too for my 18 month full service. they always have deals and in advance you can negotiate a great offer. I find them honest and very good.

You are likely correct in the fact the really cheap oil in this BA isnt going to be the best for the engine - but Cost is never a good indicator of quality or suitability for anything. You could be paying for fancy advertising or unnecessary additives.

Are there any sites out there that actually provide objective tests for what oil to use?

I found this site - which ranks Mobil1 (which I have used in past as its what my garage stocks) above GTX recommended above.

I've never come across number 1 & 2 on that list, looks like it's Mobil 1 for me from here on in

I've only got a 13 year old car that's worth €2,500. But if fast fit were offering free servicing I still wouldn't go.

The words Fast Fit and Servicing do not belong in the same sentence.
