looking to find very old stone

Over the holidays, I'm wanting to visit new grange and any other very old stone buildings. As of now, I don't know where or what I'll be going to see (apart from new grange). Im starting to take an interest in stone buildings and hope to fill my curiosity on a long day trip along the upper east coast. Maybe start of from new grange and work my way up to Belfast. Anyone here know where's best to stop of to while I'm out.

Sorry op was only joking with that suggestion. If your in Newgrange it's not a big distance to travel to Hill of Tara where I think there might be a couple of upright stones. From the to the mediaeval town of Trim and you will find a massive Norman castle, a very old, tall steeple and a really old abbey with an impressive tomb in it.
Also not far from Newgrange is another old abbey at Monsterboice.

Castle Roche in Louth is spectacular - a trip to medieval Carlingford too if you're up that way - Donaghmore souterrain outside Dundalk - never been to this but it's on my hit list

What about St Colmcills house in Kells, it dates back to 11/12th century I believe. You can get the keys locally to look around.

There's a book entitled Treasures of the Boyne Valley by Peter Harbison which details many of the historic structures on, or close to, the river Boyne from source to sea. Great read, and would be a good guide for you OP.

Well it is probably Ireland's most famous stone. It either cured someone or someone got lured there and helped an Englishman grow a beard. Also had a general kind of holiness about it.
On a more serious note the town of Trim I pointed out has a lot of old buildings to see and just out the road there is Bective Abbey.
It's also not too far from Loughcrew where someone else alluded to.
Depending on when your holiday is there are guided tours around Trim Castle which are quite interesting.

There's the standing ruins of Irishtown Castle literally metres away from my folks house in Clondalkin, close to the Liffey Valley shopping centre. Not a lot is known about it, but it's over 400 years old.
