Help. High pitch noise

LOCATION: Old Dublin road, Portlaoise, Co. Laois
Over the past number of weeks, I've become aware of a higher pitch, low volume noise. It's almost inaudible (but just) during the day but so loud during the night that I can't sleep.
And it's so high pitch that my partner can't hear it.
Others have noticed it so I've ruled out Tinnitus.
Problem is it is strongest in my bedroom (and it seems to travel through objects eg my pillow) and adjoining bedroom, and when I go outside the road noise prevents me from location the source effectively.
    It's driving me nuts. NUTS!!
Please can someone suggest a method of locating source. And don't even think of mentioning ****ing TINNITUS
    Thanks

It's ALL the time. But can hear it outside as well as inside.
    I have a feeling it's a business or factory

Could be a variable frequency drive. Industrial motor speed controller.

Some kind of frequency switching. If it was on your premises you could use a low pass filter in-line. If not then maybe frequency cancellation is your solution. Those who say they can't hear it can I believe, it's still unsettling but they've tuned it out. I can hear fluorescent tube lights.

Try tripping your main RCD in the house and see if it's internal or external.

Very good suggestion from Liam to see if the problem might be arising from something inside the house like a light or possibly heating pump or fridge.

If its external to your home check with the neighbours to see if they might also be hearing the noise.

If problem is external it will probably take someone with a noise meter capable of doing frequency analysis to properly locate the source. The frequency analysis will pick up on the frequency of the high pitch tonal noise at your house and its then just a matter of tracing back to the source. If the noise is external eg from a factory or a chiller unit etc it might require your Local Authority to become involved as they have powers under the noise regulations 1994. It might be good idea to contact the Local Authority to see if they might have a noise meter capable of doing frequency analysis.

final little word of caution - noise problems can often take a bit of time to locate & resolve so best of luck.
