Receiving Saorview

Was trying to look for another thread I could ask this in without hijacking someone else's but couldn't find one.

Got our dad a tv for the kitchen a couple years ago and told at the time it was Saorview ready. But haven't been able to get Saorview on it. Can get the freeview channels though (we're in Donegal, near the border).
So now he's asking for a Saorview box. When I went to get one I was told it wasn't needed if the tv is saorview ready.

Anyone know how to confirm if it can pick up Saorview?

It's a LG M2262DL. I tried googling but had no luck.

    Thanks for any help.

I don't know the specific model but if it asked for a country when being set up determines where the channels are listed. If set to UK you would get BBC1 at 1, BBC2 at 2, etc with the Irish (Saorview) channels up in the 800's. Likewise if set to Ireland it should have the Irish in order first and the BBCs etc in the 800's

You can check saorview.ie for approved list. Yours doesn't seem to be there.

Try Gerry's idea first. Can you check TV at another house that you're sure has aerial pointed correctly at Saorview transmitter?
If still no saorview channels then check for saorview label on TV or packing box. If no label then you should try the shop who sold it and get them to prove its saorview approved.

Had brother check it and he said he checked the tuning menu, went to manual tuning and country wasn't an option

I presume you have connected it to an aeriel?

Yep. I assume that's how he's getting BBC, etc. anyway.

Brother found country option along with language and all. It's set to Ireland. And the numbering doesn't go to the 800's. But went through them all and none of the Irish channels are tuned in

Does he get the BBC HD channels or SD only?

Check that your dad is in a Saorview coverage area using the coverage checker - https://www.saorview.ie/en/get/coverage

Did he have the old analogue channels RTÉ1/2, TV3, TG4 prior to analogue switchoff in Oct 2012?

Can you tune in the Saorview radio stations from position 200 upwards?

That TV appears to be 2009 vintage, there may be a possibility it does not have the correct MPEG-4 decoder for the Saorview TV channels, radio reception would be OK. Freeview uses the older MPEG-2 standard for video.

As far as I can find out on LG site the 62D range all have Mpeg4 decoders but cant see T2 mentioned

They're in coverage area anyway. Seems to only get the standard def channels and only the BBC radio stations.

I can't remember if got the Irish channels beforehand. It's probably the aerial stopping him from getting the channels.

    Thanks everyone for your help.

Which Saorview transmitter and which Freeview transmitter are you covered by? You may require separate aerials combined depending on where the 2 transmitters are relative to your location and which frequency group they belong to.

That TV is probably too old to have a T2 HD tuner incorporated.

Ballybofey transmitter going by the map. Dunno about the freeview.
Wouldn't surprise me if it didn't have it. Wouldn't be the first time Curry's lied to make a sale, which is strange because they directed me away from another more expensive tv.

If you can identify the Freeview frequencies or UHF channel nos. you will be able to identify the transmitter. Click on the map transmitter icons to see the transmitter details.

According to this post from 5 years ago the TV works with Saorview. The DVB-T2 standard wasn't adopted until late 2009 so likely it didn't make it into this range.

I would guess it's the Strabane transmitter since I can see it from the house.

Ok, so would just need the Saorview box to actually pick it up?

I don't think any Saorview box has a DVB-T2 tuner.

For combined reception and recording of Saorview/Freeview I'd recommend a Freeview HD receiver such as the Panasonic range which allows you to store the UK channels in the correct order with the Saorview channels initially stored in the 800s but can be moved and stored in your desired position. Of course you'll require an aerial pointing to the Ballybofey transmitter.

Ballybofey transmitter has Saorview a bit lower down the frequency band than it did analogue, so if you have an aerial setup there that combined separate aerials for Ballybofey & Strabane using a filtered combiner, it won't be working at all well for Ballybofey now.

Think a this point I'm just going to leave it for now until after Christmas and I can get messing around with it myself and so I'm not rushing around busy shops looking for a box I can use.

That way can get a better idea of what it has and doesn't have and I can match it to your answers/suggestions better.

    Thanks again for the help

I don't see anything in this thread that suggests you need a box, unless you want recording ability?

Seems your non-reception of Saorview is likely to be an aerial issue.

I do remember telling my dad constantly that he needs to get the aerial fixed before, but stubbornness is hard to beat. :)
