Stay in or go to a friend's house. Seriously. New years is much better in the country than in dublin.

Dublin used to be terrible, but the tourism boards are slowly investing more into in:

Staying in is not an option.

Stay out of the city center and a lot of the suburbs too.. Its a horrible night, but not as bad as Paddy's Day.

If you're expecting great celebrations and an amazing fireworks display to welcome in the new year you'll be left wanting.

    House party.

I think going to a gig is your best bet.

Wait for a cold night. Go and stand outside your local for about 3 hours, then pay them 30 euro to get in. Once in, stand at the bar and wait half an hour to get served. Then go outside and wait an hour or two before getting a taxi.

Your Dublin city centre NYE training is now complete.

See if you get can a booking for a restaurant that has a new years eve menu... think La Cave on South Anne Street do something special for ringing in the New Year:

    Otherwise, I'd recommend a gig.

No trouble getting a taxi in Dublin on NYE if you leave the bar before 2am,after that it'll be hard.

Not looking for any fireworks or countdown nonsense just want to know where the party will be! I'd assume temple bar will be fairly lively?

  • It's relatively pricey but would this be an option?

NYE is overrated, coco and slippers at home and watch the sparklers on RTE go off 'about'midnight. :) or you could stand outside the church listening to the bells.

Do not depend on public transport, or expect to get a taxi.

    Other than that, enjoy!

Why do you say stay out of the city center?

Because it will be jam packed with no-marks and amateurs who can't handle their drink but think they can party like it's 1999. Messy.

True, most Saturday nights are like that! Hopefully we can find somewhere decent, starting in either O'Donoghues or blackbird.

Anyone going into town tonight will have no problem getting a taxi or public transport home. Top tip is don't bother waiting at a taxi rank, start to walk out of town along the main routes and you will pick up a taxi no problem.

The following late night DART and Commuter services will operate on New Year's Eve:

01.30hrs & 02.30hrs from Pearse serving all stations to Howth
01.30hrs & 02.30hrs from Connolly serving all stations to Greystones
01.40hrs & 02.40hrs from Pearse serving Tara St, Connolly, and all stations from Howth Junction to Dundalk
01.20hrs & 02.50hrs from Pearse serving all stations to Maynooth

I don't think anyone in the World goes to a taxi rank anymore. Everyone starts to walk the main routes out of town, hence the competition for taxis.

You may get lucky depending on what time you try and head home but there's no doubt there will be people left trying to get a taxi for an hour or so.

If the new years eve gig at the point is anything like the good old night we had with madness in college green 2 years ago it will only get started at 12pm. It should go up to about 12.45 and you may want to start heading for drinks at home by that stage.

Dublin needs something like that on new years eve, ideally in college green but you are always subject to the weather, but that't the same for every city in northern europe and they can generally put on a big show year after year.
