    Hi all...
I am looking at doing some walls around my house in gabion baskets after seeing them in a few places they look good and going to save me alot of hassle overall..
I noticed a few kinds welded and twisted as i live close to the sea would i need to get heavy duty ones or will rust etc etc be a issue in general..
And is there anywhere i can get them in Ireland at a good price ,,
Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated ..

    Malcolm

I looked at gabions for a coastal location, but decided to build drystone walls instead.

There are a wide variety of wire gauges and protective treatments used in the manufacture of gabions, you will need to research the sizes/types best suited to the walls you are planning. County councils tend to use a looser "bag" types on retaining walls, for a garden you will need the basket type. These are more rigid and easier to work with, but more expensive.

To get a good finish you will need to hand fill the sides that face out. That is why I decide to do drystone walls - a similar amount of work for a better looking finish. My walls are 1.2 to 1.6m high. If you need higher than that then gabions may be the best solution. Properly specced, installed and filled they are not a cheap option.

    Broken link.

I had a few emails from a crowd called --snip- (I've no link to this company).

Got the following prices (dimensions in meters):
    3mm welded 1.5x1x1 @ €33.75 each
    3mm welded 2x1x1 @ €43.00 each
    3mm welded 1x1x1 @ €37.15 each

Gabion stone required from your local quarry will be 4-6’ clean broken durable non weathering stone, approx. 1.7tonne stone per m3 of basket.

I didn't purchase in the end as it worked out very expensive. Delivery of baskets was around the 250e mark. Plus the labour of filling them and getting a machine big enough to lift them into place if not filled in the exact spot they were to be installed in.

    [EDIT]
Sorry BryanF, thought your link (if working) was to a company, hence opening it up for more company mentions. OP, if you want name, PM me.
