Clutch in Golf .... going?

Got into my car this morning and my clutch pedal was on the floor.

Is that bad? I know very little about cars.

It's a 2001 Golf... friend drove it a few weeks back and said that he reckoned the clutch was going.

Is it a gradual thing or a sudden thing to go?

Is the pedal all the way down with no control of the clutch or is the car still driveable?
