Running Injury

    Hi.

I began participating in triathlon in 2013. I followed this up with a further season in 2014. When the triathlon season finished, I decided to continue some form of exercise, so I joined my local athletics club and took part in some cross country. I really enjoy running and I reach a decent level of running fitness from it.

The downside is; I am prone to running related injuries.

I under-pronate. This, I'm told, makes me more susceptible to running injuries. The latest injury first came at me during the Summer of 2014. It's origin is a linear sensation along the top of my right glute. As it worsens, the associated tissue becomes inflamed and causes referred pain into my tfl, around the front of my groin and into my hip flexor and adductor brevis.

I have ried all of the obvious solutions including rest, icing, dry needling etc etc. I then went to the SSC, where I had 2 MRI scans (revealing nothing conclusive), 2 consultant visits, several physio visits and a cortisone injection (all without success). I then turned my attention to cycling as it does'nt really aggravate the problem.

I recently have gone to an osteopath and a chiropractor. I know they are not going to resolve this problem. Although one of them suggests that my illium is slightly rotated internally, putting pressure on my sacrum. I think he may be right.

Its a subtle sensation, which I can feel as a constant twinge, even in my resting state. No pain though, once I stay away from running.

    Appreciate some feedback/suggestion.

    Thanks, Eoin.

Welcome to the club. Most runners I know of suffer some physical imbalance which results in injury and a running career can be an ongoing battle to manage that with no realistic prospect of totally curing it. Besides the charter ban on medical advice, I doubt anyone could offer you a solution that several professionals haven't hit on despite being able to examine you hands on. You might want to consider a Physical Therapist who can have a head-to-toe look at you rather than treating each manifestation in isolation. Hope you get some progress with it soon.

    TtThanks for your input.

I've been assessed by the physio suite at SSC. Gave me a s+c program to follow. Glute balancing exercises etc. This didn't solve the issue, which led them to a 2nd mri, followed by a cortisone injection. This also fell short.

I just feel that as my symptoms are quite subtle; there is someone out there with the know how to address this for me.

    Any suggestions?

Hi Eoin. I suffer from similar symptoms along with a feeling of weakness in my lower hamstring behind the knee. I have been given a similar diagnosis to yourself (with forward rotation of ilium) The pain I have does not cause me to stop running, however, it gets very niggly/annoying. What has helped me are using a sliotar to self massage the glutes leaving all your weight on the area once you find a knot. I have also concentrated on hip balancing / mobility and glute strengthening exercises (runners connect website have a good routine) combined with stretching hip flexors and hamstrings. The usual outcome is this alleviates the problem, I neglect keeping it in my daily routine and then the problem flares up again!

The description you gave sounds a bit like a problem I had earlier this year. I went to 3 different physios, the 3rd physio referred me to a chiro, which I was very nervous about, but he was brilliant and fixed me up in a few sessions (pelvis out of line, lower back muscles all jarred up). I was also advised to take up yoga, which has made a huge difference to my right hip flexor, which were tightening up and causing a lot of discomfort running (including pain radiating into groin). Best of luck hope you get sorted.

    Hi.
Any chance you could send me on a contact for the chiro you had success with.

    Thanks.

I think if you've read my initial post, it's fairly evident that I've consulted numerous medical professionals, but to no avail...

Thanks for your input all the same.

I've had a similar issue, alas its not solved yet, but then I'm only putting the effort in now to resolve it. So this is my experience....
I noticed during the summer a clicking in the back of my knee every time I took a step, more worryingly I also had a pain dead centre in the right buttock. I went to have an MRI, and it turns out to be Osteitis pubis in the hip, and that has lead to ITB causing the clicking in my knee. My physio has prescribed lots of core S&C stuff which I am only getting stuck into now.
He said the fact the my right side is far weaker than the left is causing these issues. I've concentrated too much on running, and done no S&C so I'm doing a 2 month stint in the gym now to build up my hips and legs. Hopefully that will pull everything back into place. Currently I'm doing this every day http://strengthrunning.com/2011/02/the-itb-rehab-routine-video-demonstration/
The most frustrating thing is I can run, but right now its not enjoyable as I know the hip will be bothering me afterwards. Good luck.
