What happens if someone ignores an inheritence?

The title says it all really, a group of people are meant to inherit some money, land or whatever and one just doesn't respond to contact after probate has gone through with their name on it. They don't turn it down but they also don't engage anymore.
Do the others just share it between them instead or is it held for the person who's name is on it?

The executor is stuck with it until the other person responds.

You can't just pinch his share because he does not answer a few letters.

I'm just interested in what would happen or if there's a time limit on claiming something, it's not about me personally or that I know someone left out.

I guess it's a good question. Not even someone not responding, but someone who can't be reached. It must happen all the time - someone has been left €500 in a will but the last anyone knows is that they emigrated to Florida 30 years ago.

What happens if it costs €200 to track them down? Do you deduct that from the €500? What if the cost is more than this - e.g. you've found a P.I. who will probably track the person down, but they're gonna bill you 4 hours @ €150 an hour? Do you give up and divide that within the estate? Or is there a year and a day rule?

Surely the costs are deducted from the residue?
