I had issues previously with water getting into the spare wheel well in the boot. So when I heard a sloshing noise when I take off I checked it but it was pretty dry.

Ive given the doors and the boot lid a good shake and hear nothing.

Its a 3 door golf.. can't think of where else it could be...

    How's your coolant level?

Try your rear window washer, if the bottle is full but no water is making its way to the back window the pipe may bee leaking along the way. This small pipe runs under the carpets through the cabin.

    Other possibilities include:
    - The water channels on the roof filling with moss / leaves
    - Same with the pollen filter in the glove box
    - Rear lights leaking

Fuel in the tank? How full/empty is it?

If the footwell carpets are dry I'd guess fuel tank too. Fill it up and see if the noise stops.

    Could be in the sills.
There might be a rubber grommet under the front doors.
Pop it out and see !

Are there compartments behind the quarter panels in the boot of the golf for jack, wheel brace etc?...could be water lodging there if there are.

Should this thread be in the DIY and car maintenance forum I would have thought?
