Break in Service? - Resigning from Local Authority to take up Civil Service position

    Hi,

I currently work for a Local Authority and I've been offered a position in the Civil Service. I remember being advised once from a colleague to ensure that there is no break in service (even over a weekend) when moving within the Public Sector. Ideally I'd like one employment to terminate on a Friday and my new contract to commence on Saturday to prevent a break in service. Has anyone heard this or have any advice to give??

    Much appreciated.

Call the HR of the Civil Service organisation you are going to be working for.

They might not know your specific situation but they'll probably know which direction to go to get the ball rolling. They'll probably be involved in sorting you out one way or the other.

Note that while the civil service has changed a bunch in the last few years and people are not forced to take time off or to work this week.. they might not be around to talk to you till after the holidays.

Thanks for the advice but you are right, there's no one senior enough in the organisation that I'm joining or leaving to answer my query. I'll have to put off signing a contract until I get a definitive answer, probably early next year!!

I wouldn't worry about it too much if it's them you are worried about. They more than likely understand that it's currently a holiday time. Probably this inconveniences you the most because you don't know for sure.

Get your starting date from your new organisation taking into account how much notice you have to give and the time it will take to sign and return your contact, get your contract and sign it with them.

Give notice to your existing employer that you wish to terminate your existing employment contract on the day before you start in your new organisation. If your starting on a Monday I think it will be fine to say you wish to terminate on the Sunday before.

If your HR don't like you finishing on a non working day then change plans to start on a Wednesday and amend the starting date on your new contract in agreement with your new employer and give notice to finish on the Tuesday.
