    Hi,

    Can anyone help, I'm applying for a new job and they want a five year background check. I need to get start and end dates for all my previous jobs. I don't have my p45s from many of them, does anyone now a solution ? I would rather not have to get in touch with some old employers if I can help it. Is there anything I can do ?

    Not really in my experience.

    I'd a five year background check last year and was required to supply references for each job I'd been in, all of whom were contacted, and they seperately went and contacted HR/Personnel in each company to check a second time.

    Is this being done by a company who specialise in background checks or directly by your new employer?

    Thanks for the reply, its part of the recruitment process to provide a backround check, its just going to be such a hassle to contact all the different companies.

    You don't need to, you just give all of their details.

    Bear in mind that depending on how thorough the background check is, that if you have a gap of more than three months between any jobs, they will want an explanation of what you were doing, and proof that you were e.g. on social welfare/travelling, and just telling them won't be enough.

    I've just noticed you don't have start and end dates for jobs, do you have start month and end?

    This.

    Just put down the 1st of the month for each start, and the last for the end.

    They will understand what you mean.

    Also, in future when you leave a job, make sure they give you a certificate of service, for just this sort of reason.
