Where do I start with this? I'm seeing cables plus software on ebay for about 100 quid. I'm thinking of getting it for my own use on a 06 C5 and a 2003 C5. OBDII is useless on both these cars. Anyone have one? Or point me in the right direction.

Make sure you buy one of the more expensive ones from a reputable seller, you will also need an XP laptop to get it to work properly. It has many quirks to get used to but is a good powerful tool.

Would it work with XP through a virtual machine?

It does but only with VMware, I tried virtualbox but it was flaky at best, also having a usb 2.0 port is handy for this purpose. To be honest the interface on the lexia is poor, its quite hard to use and does take considerable time to learn all its quirks and features so don't be too put off at first.
