Any mundane reason why a new washing machine does not take fabric conditioner?

We got a new washing machine a few days ago and it does not seem to take fabric conditioner, it just stays in the compartment. I looked it up and apparently the conditioner can clog the passage with time, but surely not in a new appliance? It's a bog standard conditioner too.
Is there a chance that it's something simple that the installers should have removed and didn't? I took out the drawer but can't see anything obvious...

Are you sure it's the right compartment, some have a separate powder compartment for pre rinse

    It's a Zanussi Lindo 100.

Never heard of any washing machine that didn't have a conditioner compartment

Lately I noticed some of the paint on our washing machine was slightly darker than the rest, it seems these darker spots are rusting from the inside out. Further investigation showed it was leaking due to part of the conditioner compartment been blocked by old conditioner, a few minutes cleaning and the leak has stopped.

It will be interesting to see if this is a new thing amongst manufactures or just Zanussi

Possibly something to do with the wash program you are using?

To clarify, it does have a compartment for conditioner - it's just that it doesn't work... Conditioner is not being washed into the machine in the cycle.

Tried out 4 different cycles so far.

Pop the drawer out just to make sure there is a nozzle under the compartment.

if the machine was in a box when delivered its unlikely the syphoning device is missing but to test it remove the soap box and fill the compartment with water up to the level line, then when further topped up it should syphon out completely, if not its either clogged or a piece missing, if it syphons I would think that the water pressure is down a bit, worst case scenario is that the solenoid valve coil is dodgy

    Thanks for all the tips!
If I take out the drawer, the compartment fills up and drains fine. Looks like water is not delivered there in the first place.
I am not seeing anything resembling a nozzle though - see attachment?

Re: water pressure, I wonder if there's something in it, our old washing machine would normally wash out the conditioner but would leave some water behind... which we never did anything about.
Our tap & shower water pressure is good, but we have a combi boiler with a pump setup.

I'll try using washing powder in the detergent compartment now, I've been using tablets that go in the drum so far.

OK so it does look like it might be water pressure indeed. Washing powder is wet but only a third of it was taken. Looks like water gets in and gets out but there is not enough of it to wash out the content properly.

Is this a sufficient explanation? It's not a big issue actually (as we can always use tablets) but I just don't want to accept a faulty machine in case it was a fault.

That's standard practice, it's to ensure that the compartment doesn't dry out and leave a sticky residue behind.

Pull the machine out and check the supply hose is not kinked and the lever valve is fully open. If both ok then turn off lever valve, disconnect hose (expect some spillage) and check the little inline filter isn't blocked. Also make sure you are connected to the cold supply.
