So my toilet was filling very slowly and I plunged it a few times which seemed to work. The trouble is that now when I flush it I can hear this mad echoey gurgling sound from the shower! Anyone any idea what to do?

There's probably blockage in the waste pipe. I'd say the shower and toilet waste are connected, and when you moving the blockage in the toilet, you could've moved it onto the shower. Try plunging the shower, and used some chemical unblockers. After that you may call a plumber

This is potentially a very serious issue because it MAY and I repeat MAY, indicate a bigger problem where the water in the trap in the shower is being sucked out by the flow from the toilet, running the risk that toxic fumes from the sewer pipe will be allowed into the bathroom, with possibly fatal consequences: especially if upstairs.

[The analysis here was wrong, it was a design fault]

You need to have it all checked out as well as ensuring that there is a properly working vent stack.

You post says filling, I presume you mean emptying.

I plunged the shower drain and then took off the shower head and ran water through the drain for a while. That seems to have done the trick. No more gurgling noises and the toilet is emptying properly! Thanks for everyone's help!

Make sure the water trap seal is in tact on the shower trap
