    Hi.

    This is a hypothetical question.

It relates to cancellation fees for a broadband and phone bundle.

Let's say it's 50 euro a month for the bundle.

Let's say contract is for 18 months and 9 months in, I wanted to cancel.

I know there are multiple different carriers and they all probably have a different cancellation fee.......but any idea roughly on how they calculate it for above example ??

eir use the same value as the tariff, so two months into an 18mo @ 50/mo would €800.

Fook. That's very saucy. A lot of money.

Does not sound fair, Virgin have a 200 euro flat fee. And Eircom have their own rule.

Different companies different policies. At the end of the day if a customer agrees to a 18 month contract with a service provider then they should be expected to pay for 18 months. If they are not receiving the service and have tried numerous times to resolve this with their service provider they should be let leave without penalty.

Indeed. OP: it's worth chatting with the provider and asking them if you're trying to get out of a contract. If you're scoping to see who has most flexible contract then it's usually the remainder of the contract apart from Virgin. Almost everyone else uses Open Eir wholesale so they're typically passing on wholesale cancellation policy so they should be the same / similar.

Don't forget that when calculating cancellation fees they can't charge VAT on the remaining months. So 10 months at €50 per month would be €500 minus the VAT.

Out of curiosity why can they not charge vat?

Also, to add, what is the rate of VAT for this ?

They can only charge VAT for services already provided. The VAT rate is 23%.

Eir is €150 for the broadband and €100 for the talk package
