Just got an email to much fanfare that the Barringtons Hospital Great Limerick Run is now the Official Munster Marathon and Half Marathon Championship for the next three years.

    :mad::mad::mad:

North Cork AC or Waterford AC are clearly incapable of putting on a good event.

I don't know how in the hell this got passed to be honest. First of all, the part that affects the runners, that's a 300% rise in the entry fee for the Munster half in three years. In 2013, it was 20 quid to enter this and was a brilliantly organised race by St. Finbarrs who held it for years, that race had so much history and died the very minute they moved it to Charleville which over doubled the entry fee but at least it was a club run race and exceptionally organised.

This is just complete BS. Paying 60 bucks to a commercial race for a Championship race whose event group have already been known to not give a toss about runners, run races without a permit while clashing with permitted events . It's a complete joke!

Let me get this right, the marathon and half marathon championships are being run side by side on the same day?

That was stated in the content of the GLR email. However the Munster AAI fixture list only has the half marathon listed for that day which would make more sense..

    Cork Running blog on it.

Some odd anonymous comments saying how great the organisers are.

Having booked into Limerick two days ago I welcome this though I can see how some would be annoyed. a 50 euro half is a lot. It being on a Sunday is better too. This won't be good for Cork.

Will the 6 mile race be the Munster 10k?

I think having a regional marathon championship is a bit mad anyway.

Yeh have to agree with this. Didn't even realise there were provincial marathon championships. Seems very unnecessary. But if they are going to be held, then they should be done right, not lumped in with some happy clappy overpriced fun run.

Dublin marathon is the national marathon championships and the Dublin marathon championships, and there's a proposal that there be a Leinster marathon championships incorporated too. (The county and provincial championships are organised by the county and province boards)

one of the anonymous comments on the cork running blog is this
Not really surprised by this move. It was badly managed by Charleville half Marathon. When you were signing up on the website it wasn’t stated clearly about the Munster Half. Also the prize giving afterwards was really badly organized. It’s sad to see it moved to a commercial event but it’s the sign of the times.

I thought Charleville was super well organised. It will be interesting to see how many club athletes will enter it.

Crazy decision. Whatever about the full marathon, It should rotate between the main clubs half marathon in each county. That way every county/club would get a decent level of exposure over 6 years. I can't imagine the logos it's being too difficult either.

Fwiw I think regional marathon & half marathons are a good idea

It's not the marathon championships, there is no such thing as the Munster Marathon Championship, just the Munster Half Marathon. The issue here is that Munster AAI are giving the race to a commercial for profit event instead of a club run race. They are lining their own and the organisers pockets and have shown disdain the Munster clubs who have half marathons on the calender a chance for some well needed extra fundraising. Championship races should be club run events and not in the hands of a businessman.

The thing is, that's even only half the issue in this case as the RD and his event group have blatantly disregarded AI in the past and shown little respect for the club's in the area when they ran an unpermitted race on the same weekend as a club sponsored race in the same area. They also deleted all criticism of the event of the race when it went done like a stone off their Facebook page and yet, Munster AAI award them with this pocket filler. The organisers couldn't give a toss about runners or clubs and to me, that's what a Championship race is all about.

The price without a concession is just more fuel for the fire, why should club athletes have to pay an exorbitant entry fee to a commercial event group to run in a Championship race? The whole thing is an absolute fiasco and they never should have been awarded the event.
