How can I get an x-ray?

I've had pretty bad wrist pain for the last month and a half, maybe even the last 2 months (can't remember). I didn't injure it, not that I'm aware of. It hasn't gotten any better...sometimes it's OK sometimes I can't even lift anything. Anyway, I live abroad but am home for a month and just wondering what to do about it. Should I go to my GP? Or is that just a waste of time? I certainly don't want to go to A&E, it isn't exactly urgent. I would like to know what the problem is though. I'm guessing an x-ray would be a start? How do I get one?

Not looking for medical advice, just wondering what would be the best way to get it seen to. I'm pretty clueless as you can tell, it's been a long time since I've been to a doctor/hospital in Ireland.

Apologies if I'm not allowed ask this, and thanks for any replys.

Go to your G.P, You can ask for an x-ray and he/she will refer you. It'll cost you the visit whereas if you go directly into A&E (Which you're perfectly entitled to do, Your issue will not compromise the treatment of someone in an emergency situation) You'll be charged €100.

    That helps, thank you :)

Go to your GP. If they think an x-ray is needed, they will refer you for one and this will include someone who can read it.

But if they're worth their salt, they will also assess you for other OOS / repetitive strain / etc injuries - usually before spending on X-rays etc.

A week ago I went to my gp with the same problem and he sent me for an x-ray. I'm having this problem for 3 years, I tried physiotherapy, exercises, swimming and no improvement at all, I hope it won't take months till they schedule me (Tallaght hospital)

Last time I went to Tallaght for X-ray the GP gave me a form and I just went up same day.

If the wait is long you could try a Swiftcare, pricey though if you haven't got VHI.

Well without giving medical advice, a scan or xray isn't going to rule in or out any of the other causes of chest pain, so you should just go back (maybe to a different GP) and say it's persisting.

    Go to a different GP.

You cant go anywhere and ask for a scan, a GP or consultant will have to order it. But you CAN insist on further investigation and if your GP is rubbish then see a different one.

Insist on referral to a specialist.

Yes, theyre like a private A&E. Or an out of hours GP. They wont deal with heart problems or major issues like stroke etc. Theyre brilliant for minor breaks, cuts, colds, sore throats etc... But if id something serious wrong id go to a real A&E.

But they are very thorough so i guess you could go and at least youd get looked at by a different GP and they could do an x ray there if it was necessary? They refer you on from there if necessary too. And theyre fast, you see a doctor within minutes of walking in.

Check if your policy includes discounted visits to Swiftcare.
