    Hi,

I'm prepairing my documents and everything for importing my car on the 4th of Januari.

    revenue says:

    - You must make an appointment with the NCTS within 7 days of its entry into the state to have a pre-registration examination of the vehicle carried out.

Does this part costs money? if yes how much, remember this is only the pre-

    When I check here: http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/vrt/pre-registration-inspections-faqs.html

its only talking about TAN holders, but im not a tan holder.

    - You must complete the registration process and pay the VRT at the NCTS center within 30 days of the arrival of the NCTS website.

I will arrive on the 4th of Januari, because of all the tax stuff I read its the best to pay the vrt: 1st of the month, because if I don't I may need to pay tax from the 1st till whatever date I am importing it, right?

So if I pay the VRT on the 20th I still need to pay tax from 1 till 20 Januari, is this correct?

I know it takes a few days before the revenue assigns me a license (10 days?)

So beteen 22-30 Januari should be perfect, it will start on the 1st of Februari?

anything else I need to look at? it got a new NCT in Holland on 30-06-2015 which expires 30-06-2016.

I will take the boat from france to dublin, I will bring all documents including all my booking things so I have proof when I arrive in Ireland.

What license will I get? Will I get one based on where im living or where the car is imported?

I know cars will have a YY-County-number reg, but I also know that new cars got YYM-County-number.

Does this mean I get 161-D-???? or 161-KE-???? because im living in Kildare?
I will import the car in Co. Dublin or will I get 92-D-???? or 92-KE-????

I will also have a document confirming the last repairs on the car, document showing the last dutch nct, will have the rhd rear lights already mounted on the car.

    anything else?

Yes. The first step is to bring the car to NCTS/VRT office. They will check your forms and verify your car's VIN number. You will pay the VRT and usually get your new registration number on the same day. They do not do the normal NCT safety checks here.

So if I pay the VRT on the 20th I still need to pay tax from 1 till 20 Januari, is this correct?

The registration number is assigned quickly (on the spot usually). I think with that timing, you'll most likely be required to pay tax for January. However, you can declare the car off the road (SORD) immediately after it's registered and hold off taxing it until February. Obviously, you wouldn't be able to drive it though.

You'll get a county plate based on the home address you give them (proof of address with a utility bill). If you live in Kildare, it will be something like:
    92-KE-15YYY

I will also have a document confirming the last repairs on the car, document showing the last dutch nct, will have the rhd rear lights already mounted on the car.

Fine, but it won't be asked for these on registration. You might be asked for a receipt showing the price you paid for the car. Dutch NCT, repairs etc don't matter.

Once you have the car registered, you can book a normal NCT. Then the car will be checked, including RHD headlights etc.

If it's an old car (1992?), valued €2000 or less, the VRT should work out at €600.

Question : will they take my Dutch licence plates? Otherwise I should be able to drive with those even after import because I have insurance on them and I am allowed to drive with them for 2 weeks after 31st. Or should I wait to pay vrt till I'm example at day 10 or so? Because I can legally drive with the plates for 2 weeks, then pay vrt on the 11th of January or so. Put it off road till 1 Feb

If you declare it off the road immediately once it's registered on the fourth, you can't drive it until you tax it.

Okay so it's best to just make the appointment later?. Or tell them I don't have the money and will get it 'in 1,5 week' and then pay?

Well you can't drive the car around with bmp vrt or tax if revenue catch you with no vrt they will potentially seize the car

If you are a resident of another country and you have owned the car for six months or more and you are moving here I thought the vrt was zero?

OP has lived here for some time though and is now importing the car, which iirc was not registered to him in the past, if it's the one I'm thinking of. Think it was in his aunts name?

Correct, I bought the car in my name but it was registered in her name because I am living here.

I sold my other car already (mx5 Turbo) this one is stock

    offroad won't work:

Q8. How long can I declare the vehicle off the road for?
A8. The minimum period is three calendar months, the maximum is twelve calendar months i.e. you cannot declare a vehicle off the road for either one or two months. The declaration must be for full calendar months, starting on the first day of a month and ending on the last day of a month.

    but

Q14. I’ve just bought a vehicle – how can I make a declaration that I intend to keep it off the road for a while?
A14. If you have just bought a new vehicle or just acquired a second hand one and do not intend to use it immediately, you will have twenty one days from the date of purchase (as specified in the registration document or the notification of transfer of vehicle ownership) to furnish a declaration of non-use. In that case, the declaration will commence from the first day of the month in which the sale takes place, or the first day of the month of registration in the case of new vehicles.
Make sure you notify the seller that you are intending to declare the vehicle off the road and that you need him or her to ensure that the change of ownership is notified to the National Vehicle and Driver File as soon as possible.

Q15. What if I’m due to have an NCT while my car is off the road?
A15. A vehicle may be used during the period of a non-use declaration in two cases:
to bring it to and from a test centre for the test; or
to bring it for repair after a re-test, or back to where you are keeping it while it is off the road after the repairs. This option may only be used where an appointment has already been made for a re-test.
The same rules apply to roadworthiness testing for commercial vehicles.
If you are bringing the vehicle to a test centre or to or from repairs after a test failure, it would be advisable to carry a copy of the appointment for the test or re-test with you.

    and I found:

    Vehicle registration plates
When you register and pay the VRT, a registration number will be assigned to your car – see ‘How to apply’ below. You must display the registration number within 3 days. Failure to display the new registration number is an offence and you can be fined by An Garda Síochána. You can obtain vehicle registration plates from the NCTS centre or any motor factor.

Anyway I rescheduled my appointment for the 9th of Januari instead because I paid insurance on my current license up to the 15th of Januari.

If you declare the vehicle off the road for 3 months or 12 months there is nothing at all to stop you taxing it after , say, 2 months or 8 months. Taxing it revokes the off road declaration. So if it is off the road (ie presented at the NCTS on a trailer), you can declare it off the road immediately you get the registration number, and then tax it from whenever it goes into service.,

Hm interesting, I may look into options that will not take the car offroad I think I have the following options

    1. I am allowed to drive the car till the 15th legally because I have insurance and license plates.
    2. I Need to book a appointment with the ncst within 7 days of arrival in the state so before the 11th, I made appointment on the 9th and legally because the car is in my name I am allowed to drive it
    3. On the 9th I pay the VRT for the car, on that day I get my license plate and I have 2 options here, 1. put the car offroad for 3 weeks or wait because the registration need to be complete within 30 days so before the 3rd of Feb or just stratch the vrt till the end of the month which is still within the legal time

anyway a lot of issues :P
