Riverboat jobs

Howya folks! What's the story with river transport this side of the pond? When I was a kid in the states there were lots of companies running passengers and cargo and there'd usually be ads out for crew. If you were green some of them could train you. Tis true we don't have the same scale waterways like they do in the US but what about the Liffey or Shannon? Jobs on tourist boats? Or over on the Thames on barges or freight ships? How do companies source crews and what would you need to get qualified?

As an island nation, most of our boating work is more maritime in nature than river. That said, there is a burgeoning tourism cruiser sector in Ireland. If you look up Waterways Ireland, they should be good as a starting point for seeking a job on Ireland's rivers.

I'd say if you go and ask on Boards.ie Maritime forum, there'll be plenty of river & sea dogs who'll be able to help you.
