On this day 1834, the public started travelling on the Dublin and Kingstown Railway. Thus was born Ireland's first railway, and the world's first commuter railway.
Let us not forget that Dublin had a public railway before London, Paris, Berlin, Vienna, Rome, Moscow, Tokyo, New York or Washington

Depending on where you read about this there does be some confusion with many historians/books stating 9th October 1834 as the first public train IIRC, but I think I read somewhere that the first public "test train" ran that date with non fare paying passengers and the first public fare paying train began running on 17th December.

Wednesday 17th December @ 9am was the public opening

Earlier opening plans were abandoned when the bridge over the Dodder was demolished in a flood

9th of October was the first (steam) train to travel the full line.

First public railway. It seems there could have been private railways as early as 1700 and let's not forget the Atmosperhic Railway was built on the original Dalkey Quarry tramway built for the construction of Dún Laoghaire Harbour, which was started in 1817, although I don't know the exact date the tramway was built.

The quarry line aka the Metals, was a horse drawn tramway, conveying granite downhill only.
I define a public railway as a steam, or other mechanically propelled rail line serving the public.
As for private railways in Ireland about 1700, I suspect this may be a timber formed track, the medieval equivalent of a guided busway.
