Santa Fe 2.2 diesel blocking oil strainer

    My 2006 2.2 Santa Fe, has 200k, and is suffering from carbon buildup on the oil strainer in the sump. I know it's getting blocked as I hear a noise from the engine of the oil pump being starved of oil. So far, in the last 3 months I've removed the sump and cleaned the strainer 3 times. The inside of the engine is very clean as a result of regular servicing with good quality recommended oil for the car. As you can guess if the strainer is going to get blocked, the engine will seize.

    And this, it seems, is pretty common with these cars. However, a solution as to why this carbon is constantly being built up on the strainer is much less common. I've been told it could be the EGR valve stuck open. And now I've been told it's washers under the injectors that cause carbon that is deposited into the sump.

    I'm lucky enough to be able to do work to the car myself, but can anyone tell me what is causing this to happen?

    I was thinking injector washers myself easy enough job and something to cross off the list.

    You could get the EGR blanked and mapped out of the ECU if you know a decent tuner that can work on those engines, also as was mentioned the Injector sealing washers failing is a common cause of carbon in the oil, Toyota landcruisers had a recall for this.
    Worth making sure the injector sealing surface is very clean as well, you can get kits to make sure the surface is not covered in carbon which will cause the same problem again.

    Thanks lads.

    I knew somewhat about the Landcruiser suffering from injector seals problems. Do you know if this is also a known fault on the Santa Fe's?

    I was thinking injector washers myself easy enough job and something to cross off the list.

    +1 the copper washers wear over time. I done mine on 04 D4D corolla and it stopped immediately.
