I'm <400m from a fibre cabinet but have been told I can only get 12Mb

So I've been using mobile broadband for the last few years and am getting fairly decent speeds, about 10Mb download most of the time. But I've been getting sick of download limits, constantly watching my usage and would like a speed boost, so have been trying to get fibre broadband in.

As I already have Sky TV and don't want an 18 month contract I've been trying to get Sky fibre in. The cabinet at the entrance to my estate was upgraded last year so I'm in a fibre area. As i didnt have a phone line I had one connected last week and the engineer told me I should get very good speeds. When he tested the line it showed I was around 380m to the cabinet.

Sky called me back today to finalise the order but told me eircom had tested the line and advised it was profiled to 12Mb download so that was all they could offer. When I check my neighbours the speed advised on their lines range from 100Mb to 60Mb and they are even further from the cabinet. However a few houses that don't have an active phone line are showing at 12Mb, the same as I'm being offered.

I told Sky I wouldn't be completing the order unless they could offer me better and I would be requesting to phone line to be disconnected. They said they were going to send an email to eircom.

Is there anything else I can do to get them to do another test on the line?

    Two scenarios:

    A. the pair he connected you to bypasses the cab

    B. The exchange tests have been run but the cabinet's test have yet to be.

If its the latter eir should be able to test it early, if its the latter you're SOL.

    Thanks ED E,

I'll wait a while and see if Sky can get Eir to do anything. The exchange that the cabinet connects to is about another 3.5km from it. Do you know does that tie in with a speed of 12Mb?

If it's scenario A I'm guessing there is no chance Eir would send an engineer again to connect to the fibre at the cabinet.

Edit: I suppose should add that it was confirmed that my line is fibre enabled. I guess it would say that whether it was connected at the cabinet or the exchange.

Oh ok, in that scenario thats a fiber 12Mb not an ADSL one so. KNN or Sierra botched the installation.

Yeah once the line was connected Sky said I had an option of ADSL at 1Mb/s or Fibre at 12Mb/s.

So if KNN botched the install is there anything that can be done?

Call sky, they can escalate it back to the field and they'll return.

I'm in a similar situation with eir, 500m from fibre cab and I've been connected up to the standard broadband which is 1500m away, I've had 2 technicians (one kn the other eir) tell me that I can 100% get fibre broadband yet I'm stuck with 7mg downloads at the moment

I can check the latest 'VDSL prequal' file for your address. It lists the Max high speed and Max stable speed in it. Latest one is just a few days old.

Don't need number, just address. PM if you wish.

APQ for an address is just a guess, for a line its an actual test.

There's no NGA prequal tool within the Open Eir UG, therefore that file is what everything is based on.

I'm curious to know what it says anyway so I'll send a pm.

So flamegrill was able to give me the below from the prequal file for my address.

    ,FTTC,,CKN,RUY,004,12M_1M_R,10M_1M_FR,

Which suggest 12/1 max speed that I've been advised before and 10/1 max stable which is worse than I get with my current mobile broadband.

The fibre cabinet at my estate is RUY1_004 so I think the the "RUY,004" would suggest I'm connected to it. But the CKN might suggest the cabinet connects back to the Carrick-on-Shannon exchange CKN1_E01 which is about 18km away instead of the Roosky exchange RUY1_E01 less than 4km away......that wouldn't make sense to me though as the engineer told me he had to go to Roosky to connect me at the exchange.

Before I had even got a line in the Eir website said I could only get 12Mb/s but I had assumed that was because I didn't have a line for them to test. It never change after I was connected though.

Can you check your SNR margin in your router? You may find it is around 30dB and that your line speed can be increased significantly. A quick call to the technical support of your service provider should resolve this

The file is suggesting CKN as RUY was subtended previously or still is, meaning ADSL speeds were likely limited for those in the village. Your line still terminates on the frame in RUY.

Have you checked phone numbers for houses 1-2 left or right of you? That'll hint at a weird cable path or a ****ty drop wire in your premises.

I don't actually have a Sky modem/router yet so can't check that. It will be January before they send a sky technician out with one.

It's been suggested to me that the most likely reason I'm only being offered low speeds is that the KN tech on the install day did not update or record the proper cable path detail's (or full circuit info) on the system.
This basically makes my line blind to NGA until the full line info is imputed to it(partial info will not be recognized).

If this is my issue the only way this can be resolved is to convince Open Eir to get a technician out to find and record the actual cable path.

I checked most of the houses in my section of estate this morning on the Eir website but not had flamegrill check them on the prequal file. I've listed them below from furthest away from the cabinet working closer to it. Nearly all the ones showing bad speeds are peoples second homes so they probably don't have a line connected.
    1. 60Mb/s
    2. 70Mb/s
    3. 12Mb/s 1Mb/s ADSL (was showing 12Mb/s last week)
    4. 12Mb/s
    5. 80Mb/s
    6. 12Mb/s
    7. 100Mb/s
    8. 80Mb/s
    9. 12Mb/s (me)
    10. 12Mb/s 1Mb/s ADSL (was showing 12Mb/s last week)
    11. 12Mb/s
    12. 80Mb/s
    13. 90Mb/s
    14. 90Mb/s
    15. 90Mb/s
    16. 90Mb/s
    17. 90Mb/s

The second homes would have been provided later on yeah? There's a resonable chance if houses were added that a second maim pair was pulled to service them meaning half the homes could have good links to the cab and the rest loop around a different direction. Only eir staff can view the cable records though to confirm.

By second home, I meant holiday homes. All the houses in the estate were built at the same time. Just before the economy went belly up and people were still buying weekend homes. Those second homes only get used for a few weeks in the Summer which is why I'm guessing they wouldn't have a phone line connected.

I don't know what just happened but I tested my phone number on the Eir website and it now shows 90Mb/s. But when I use my address it's still showing 12Mb/s.

This is just bizarre! I'm going to have to get back on to Sky tomorrow and make sure they can see the same. I'd be happy out if I could get close to that.

Eir have re-prequalified you, they ran the tests again (or at all). As above, ignore the address, its the number that really matters.

    All is good for you.

So I got back on to Sky Monday to see if they could now see 90Mb/s for my line to be told because the order was placed they couldn't check on their system and I could only get the speed I ordered at. They advised me to cancel my order and re order. So I canceled. It then took 24hrs before the cancellation was complete and I could reorder. So yesterday I was back in touch with Sky and this time reordered at 90Mb/s max download speed. :)

So then I logged into the sky website today only to find that they've dropped the price of the fibre unlimited broadband offer to €35 a month for the first 12 months as of today. It was €40 per month yesterday when I ordered. So I've contacted Sky yet again to get them to put me on the newer (cheaper :D) offer.

I have to say it's great having the talk to Sky Ireland forum on boards and being able to PM their reps to get issues resolved or call backs. Despite all the hassle I've been through so far they have been very helpful when they can.
