So after severe flood damage, our insurance assessor wrote our car off. Its still got at least 8 months of tax on it, possibly more. We've to go out as soon as possible to make sure there isnt anything else left in it. Is there any way to claim this remaining tax back?

If the car is legitimtely scrapped you can claim your tax back in block of three full months I think, so you can claim 6 of those 8 months back once the paperwork is in order.

    Edit: not quite :)

Contact the tax office, there was a way of claiming it back before, I'm not sure of the criteria though.

It is possible that the valuation they gave you on the car includes the tax on it so they might be planning on claiming it back if they were scrapping the car, so you might need to talk to the insurance company about it

After speaking to someone in the know, the tax office usually insist on the car being completely written off ie. Will never be back on the road again. A lot of flood damaged cars end up back on the road so any prospective buyer the insurance company has may not be too keen on the car being completely wrote off.

Last time he done it, he had to put a cut in the chassis leg before they'd give him a refund..

Ah well the tax for the year was little over €200, given the valuation we got Id say himself will probably just forgo the tax!
