Turbo Replacement

Just wondering how long it should take a order a new turbo and replace. My car has been in the garage over 2 weeks now. They keep telling me they are waiting on the part.

I only bought a 2013 car from them 2 months ago and they said they're warranty doesn't cover turbos but they will replace it out of courtesy!

It depends on a lot of things, 2 weeks is kind of passing the threshold of a reasonable timeframe unless they have a good story.

They could be looking to buy second hand and waiting for an appropriate donor car to come into stock somewhere.

They could be having your old one reconditioned and are waiting for parts.

They could have ordered a new one from the manufacturer and it's currently out of stock.

What car is it? Must be only just outside the manufacturers warranty is it?

On a '13 car?? If it was bought in a garage only 2 months ago outside the manufacturer's warranty when you bought it and they tried to pull that non-warranty card, I'd tell them it is covered under the Statutory legislation of the Sale of Goods Act. If they pull out the "engine & gearbox warranty only" card, they cannot get around the statutory law, especially when you bought it 2 months ago. They are trying to avoid paying out on a job that is covered.

The sale of goods act does not specify any time frame that you are covered for, only what might be reasonably expected. IMO, a turbo would be included in that category as its unreasonable to expect a turbo to fail so soon on a '13 car. Best thing to do if they are still acting the maggot, get straight down to your local solicitor.

I really don't know if that would be the "best" thing to do; jump straight to the sale of goods act, solicitors etc, getting hysterical and getting everybodies back up against one another.

I'd simply pop to the garage in person (where they can't avoid your calls) and ask for an update on the car, they will tell you what's what and then you'll know if you're happy or not. "You'll catch more flies with honey..." and all that.

They could be doing a good job and just genuinely waiting on a back ordered part and they are just not great at keeping the customer in the loop, while not ideal; it's not that bad.

If its a 2013 Car then surely it must still be under manufacturers warranty? what make of car is it?

I'd assume VAG group as they are one of very few still offering a bare basics 2 year cover, or 3 years with a mileage restriction, both of which stand a good chance of being expired by now.

I know Audi has a 3 year warranty, not sure about the rest

Yeah, 3 years or 150k or 2 year unlimited km's iirc? Toyota is also only 3 years or 100k and Ford offer 2 years unlimited km's, so there's a few poor offering still out there from what should be the most confident players.

I'm not so sure. The car is 2 to 3 years old. A turbo is a consumable part as they will in all likelihood need to be replaced during the life of the car and are subject to fair wear and tear. Depending on how the car was driven and maintained, you could easily put a turbo on its last legs in month, never mind 2 years. It would also be nigh impossible for a dealer to ascertain the life left in a turbo from a simple inspection, you'd need to tear the whole thing down. The car would be sold in good faith as such.

I'm not defending the dealer, but I don't think its reasonable to compare a car with say an iPod under the same legislation.

There was a 2 year warranty in Mercedes A-Class. Mileage is only below 40,000km. it'll be 3 weeks tomorrow they have my car and I need my car at the weekend which I have told them. But I'm just waiting to hear them say they wont have it. I'm soo frustrated with the whole thing!

What type of garage did you buy it in? A proper Mercedes dealer or a second-hand sales place?
