I was at a zebra crossing today, I had been held up a fair bit already and was in a little bit of a hurry but I don't think that had a very big impact on my behaviour. I'm waiting for secondary school kids to pass the zebra crossing, and next thing this old guy comes out of nowhere. I could have went through fast before he could possibly reach the crossing point, but I thought now hold it, better policy to just wait.

So I go as soon as he's gone and next thing I hear this really loud blaring behind me. I first thought the car behind me was holding up or something, well I look back and all the cars are still stopped at the zebra crossing with some schoolkids looking in my direction. The length of the blare freaked me out.

Surely a driver that is taking complete care is entitled to go through a zebra crossing. Surely pedestrians might potentially allow a few cars to pass before another long line of them comes along.

I really don't know whether this was some moralistic high-grounder type or if it was a genuinely bad mistake. I always try to exercise the best care, meanwhile pedestrians often come out right in front of me.

I am NOT some sort of negligent driver, the exact opposite. I always try to do everything right. I will certainly watch out better in future when dealing with zebra crossings, but it seems a little ridiculous that I can't go if someone is within 5 metre radius. When I am a pedestrian I often veer away from a pedestrian crossing if things look better for the car to go straight through, and I dislike when they stop dead and refuse to move until I've gone through.

    Are you a BMW driver?

No, and thinking about it the fact that no other car went may have formed part of the decision to hoot for that length. So a little "group think", if the guy on the other side had gone it wouldn't have happened.

Semi-rural town though close enough to the city, maybe they're not used to dealing with pedestrian movements all around.

So you didn't wait until he had finished crossing, OP? Bad form.

Getting the impression that you don't really understand zebra crossings?

Would a Zebra be invisible at Zebra crossing?

Getting the impression that you haven't realised your post has posted.

Not if they stand at 90 degrees to it. That's why you'll always see a zebra walking crab-style when they use a zebra crossing.

Or else they'll just use a pelican crossing instead.

Pedestrians have the right of way at a zebra crossing. You're required to wait until everyone has crossed.

    You're in the wrong OP.

My brother was doing his driving test years ago and stopped at the zebra crossing to let a woman cross. She had passed his side of the road and he was waiting for her to finish/making sure nobody else started to cross when the examiner turned to him and was like 'Jesus Christ, do want to take her home and tuck her into bed too?! Drive on!'

    He still passed though. :D
