Economics of Range vs Metrogolf/Trackman

Just wondering where people tend to go hit balls, especially over the winter? I use a range even though I don't particularly like to but there aren't any other options

In Cork we dont have any access to trackman or flightscope rental as far as I know? Ive always thought a setup of a few indoor bays with Trackman would more than pay for itself. A guy brings his own balls and gets to see all the stats. Whether or not its useful for their game is irrelevant cos what I see going on at the range with most people aint helping their game anyway.

At Frankfield its €4 for 36, €6 for 60ish, €8 for 90. Not sure what the average spend is but the place is doing great. Could easily see a guy regularly paying €20 for half an hour on a LM.

A large basket at 7.50 gives me about 1.5hrs practise - the going rate for 30 mins on a trackman is more than €20, maybe double that - from memory they are something like £40k new plus I'd always prefer to see my ball flight

Trackman is good for getting accurate distances with each club assuming u can hit your ball of choice

    Hmmm, I dunno.
Those Trackmans aren't cheap, plus I'd assume there's some level of training required. Would the range staff be expected to be able to use it ? Plus there will always be the "idiot factor" of people who will just do something stupid with it.

I really doubt there's enough of a market there to justify the kind of investment tbh. I mean realistically, how many average Joe club members really give a flying f--k about their face to path angle, swing path, spin rate etc etc ?? Sure, there's a few people serious enough about their golf to want the info but most wouldn't have a clue what it all means in the first place. Most likely guys would end up trying to self diagnose and IMHO that's not really what a launch monitor is best for.

There's a range in Dublin where you used to be able to pay X amount to switch on a video recorder in a bay, the camera/recorder was permanent in a steel box on a stand and even that was broken more often than not, I can only imagine what would happen to a €10k trackman and laptop.

How says you need trackman? There are other options cheaper like GC2 hmt for about 5k a lot of the youtube reviewers use these. Then there's cheaper again skytrak 2k plus a subscription if you want golf courses added.
I went to a range in London in new maldron they had bays with protracer you link your smart phone up to it was basic enough it gave flight and distance, basic but free also.

GC2 hmt is over 10k GBP or 14k Eur.
The GC2 being £5k+ and hmt just under £5k.

I'm surprised there aren't more pro's using the technology but I don't really see the need for it at the range for most.

Anyone have any experience of using any of these?

I have a skypro it's good. It has a groove mode so you can work/focus on certain parts of the swing and your scored out of 10. I use it a lot for putting practice also face angle at impact, tempo etc.

Interesting...Has your game improved do you feel since using it?

I have used both the Zepp and Swingbyte 2 and had the opportunity to compare them with a Flightscope LM for accuracy.

Firstly, it would be unrealistic to expect the Analysers, which measure the clubs movement in space to compete with the Doppler Radar systems which track the clubhead and ball. Having said that, I was pleasantly surprised at the capability of the Analysers to reflect the clubs movement given the vastly different technology and price point.

I found the Zepp and Swingbyte 2 compared well with the Flightscope in all their respective data except Clubhead speed. The Zepp was 2-3 mph over the Flightscope and the Swingbyte 2 was 2-3 mph under the Flightscope while using a Driver ? Both Analysers had been calibrated prior to testing and were consistent in readings.

I think the big benefit for users is the Training function. There are many more Analysers on the market and all have their unique features. It's about finding which suits the individuals needs. I did prefer the Zepp sensor fitted on the Glove as distinct from the Swingbyte 2 which fits on the shaft. This needs careful alignment if the returned data is to be useful.

I only have it a couple of months so hard to say but I'm much more confident on the greens I can pick a line and I'm confident I'm going to start the ball on the right line due to improvement on face alignment at impact and tempo. For the range it's great to see if your coming down inside or outside plus lots of other stuff.
