    Hi,

My partner got a car first time driving 26 years old and no driving experience he has a 1 litre car and all quotes are like 3000-4000.. There is no way he can afford that boxymo are only charging 1100 which he might go with but I was wondering can I insure his car and still keep insurance on my own car? I don't want him to drive my car as it's only new... My own car is just for social and domestic can I insure his car as the same or does one need to be a work car?

Sorry if I have placed in the wrong place I wasn't sure which one to select.

    Thanks

If you were to insure his car as your own ( with him as a named driver) it would cost you at least as much as he is currently being quoted.
You won't have a no-claims bonus on this policy, and the Insurer will decide the Premium based on the biggest risk....which is your partner.
Also if he was to be involved in an accident, and had a claim against this policy, your own insurance would be affected.

These are very surprising quotes. Who did you try? When I first got insurance the AA were the most reasonable, this was a few years ago and I was a few years older but in a 1.4. It was 1200 or so.

€1100 for a first time driver is a grand price tbh.

You cannot insure his car as you have no insurable interest ie you do not own it.

If you transfer it into your own name and insure it you wont have any bonus to use as you are using it on your own car.

Best and safest option is for him to take the hit and pay €1100, get one years bonus built up and try and pass his test.

Really We have called chill, aa, acorn, liberty, aa, first ireland.

Also Aig and 123.ie they both wouldn even insure him because he doesn't have 1 year driving experience.

1100 is good but it's with boxymo and they put a box under your car and u are limited to a certain amount of kms..

So do you mean if he transfered the car in my name and I went for insurance it would be like I am only starting to drive also? Would I tell them how many years I am driving etc? And if he did crash would I loose my ncb on my own car?
    Thanks

    Aviva/one direct?
    Did he try any broker?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 893 ✭✭✭mhackett102

Does he have his full licence?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41 LouiseS1989

Yeah we tried chill, aviva, aaran, aa,no nonsense and first ireland. We also tried aig, fbd, liberty and axa. I never tried one direct I will give them a call.. But I won't hold my breath the lowest quote was 3024 other than boxymo.

    No his provisional

That's why the quotes are so high.

    No his provisional

    What year is the car?

Even as a provisional the €3000-€4000 quotes seem quite high. Would he be able to wait until he passes his test, or is he in need to get on the road?

Yeah I thinks it's high when I started it was 1500 that was 6 years ago though..

It's a 00 nothing fancy but we are kind of in a rush to get him on the road.. Now some insurance companies arent insuring new customers who have cars that are 15 years or older so he has to buy before the end of Dec.. Boxymo won't insure him in Jan and said he has to buy policy in Dec because he then fails out of there criteria .. He got the car from a family member it's been well looked after and only 60,000 miles and will only keep it for a year or 2... If he could wait he would but doesn't want to loose the quote from boxymo for 1100 and be left with a quote for 3000.

15 year old car is only adding to the premium tbh.

Why can't he learn to drive as a named driver on your car? If you accompany him at all times?

Yeah we just realised that when he bought it we thought it would cheap because they didn need to pay much out etc if he have a crash.. I honestly don't want him to drive my car it's brand new and I know I would be so angry if he even dented it.. At least if I crashed I would only have myself to blame.. Mine is a 1.4 so I don't know if insurance would be the same.. Oh maybe I am being mean about the situation and should just let him drive mine.. I will think about it...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 893 ✭✭✭mhackett102

Firstly, the newer the car the cheaper the insurance (i.e. it would be cheaper to insure a '04 Micra 1ltr rather than a '00 Micra 1ltr)

Secondly, he is a provisional who has no experience before so it will be expensive no matter what way you look at it.

As said above by Stheno, how would it work out if he got insured as a named driver on your car. Even if its for one year he would have built up a years experience and may even have his full licence by the time the year is up.

I will defo think about it and give my insurance company a call tomorrow and see what price they give me to put his as a named driver.

    Thanks

    Right. Here's your solution.

INstead of paying out for the insurance, spent half the boxymo quote on getting him lessons for xmas, and the theory test, and the driving test, and a few hours more lessons.

Then when he proves he can drive, get him a few more lessons in your car, do the test and pass it.

You'd get all that for about 600 euro.

That's a very good idea.. I did buy him 10 lessons already for Xmas so that is done and he has his driving licence already so he doesn't need to do the theory... I never even thought of that yeah if I just get him loads of lessons I think I would be more comfortable with him driving my car..

    Thanks

If he is not irish and moved to here for work, etc, try this broker who sells car insurance to expats at reasonable price. They sell AIG policies.

3 to 4 k in current market on provisional licence is not unusual, Insurance companies are all cracking down and everyone's quotes are going up due to the insurance underwriters having enough.

If he want's to drive then he has to bite the bullet for the first few years of learning.
Sucks, but that's the reality now.

He has a provisional licence, no experience and no bonus and he has gotten a quote of €1100, how much was he actually expecting to pay?

I was paying 1200 with AA a few years ago on a provisional with no experience. Actually what made a big difference was putting my girlfriend down as a named driver (she had a full license and had been driving for 10 years)

OP, try adding yourself as a named driver and see if that helps...

I know I think 1100 is good what puts us of is there is a box placed under his car and limit u to kms and has a gps on car etc.. If you go over the kms you pay 115 a week...
