Improve my TV sound for me???

Right so I hooked up an old amp and set of speakers to my TV during the week and thought "that sounds nice".

Four days, countless hours of reading and surfing, some odd dreams of Yamaha bikes, woofers and numbers flying through my head I'm no closer to knowing what to do :)

I'm trying to decide between going for an amp and speakers or a soundbar.

I was looking at a av receiver but I don't think I'm gonna go with the whole surround thing.

I'd like something that would at least be remote controlled but preferably not need another remote to use.

Any advice would be great. Just to add I've never had a sound bar so I've nothing to compare speakers and amp to.
