Licensing hours and people who work unusual hours

So with the government now imposing pricing increases in the off trade to try to stop people drinking at home, I'm again annoyed at the licensing hours in this country. What's the purpose of them?

I work till midnight every night so as far as I can see I'm not allowed to go for a beer after work because the government doesn't trust someone who works at 9am to get out of their bed.

Dermot Ahern hand-waved this away as if it didn't happen when cutting opening hours (and excessively so on Sundays, ignoring that Sunday is often the weekend night out for service industry staff). Apparently you and tens of thousands of others don't exist or matter...

An utterly useless and pointless measure, typical FF gombeenism.

The town in the north where I'm from has a funny attitude to closing time. The cops within reason let the pubs close when they want for the simple reason they don't want a thousand or two drunk people getting out at the same time. There's not one single good reason to have strick licensing hours.

A new bill had apparently been drawn up when the 2008 act came into law. It was to address a lot of anomalies and loopholes that existed. The recession came in and distracted the politicians and civil servants, the bill was deferred and hasn't been heard from since.
