    Hi Guys,

I m looking for a bit of help, for the past few years my cars temp gauge would be grand for months and then not go up at all for 3 or 4 weeks(warning light would go on and off occasionally) , this continued for a few years after I have had the censors fixed twice.

Now its back again and same thing, Mechanic is now saying I need a thermostat replaced (usually they are around €20 mark) but he is saying i need the whole unit which is about €150-€200 quid, would this be right? or am i best getting a second opinion? or just getting the €20 part piece put in and see how it goes?

its just strange that it is working some days and not others is the usual? or could it be that something is just loose and is causing it?

    thanks.

The thermostat housing could be cracked of broken etc. Sometimes unfortunately when they're being removed they could be inadvertently broken due to brittleness of the plastic.

The thermostat could be working sporadically.

Ok thanks, So the Thermostat housing might need to be replaced? and this is where the €150 price comes from?

You should ask the mechanic what the €150 is for. Surely it's either the temp sensor or the stat.

He advised its for the whole unit rather than just the Thermostat. i got the sensor replaced already that was only about €15

Did you notice any difference with the new sensor in it? I was having very similar issues with my 2002 1.6 Octavia. The temp sensors are a very common failure on them, they were replaced with a newer model sensor (The casing for the sensor is green) One i put in the new sensor it Fixed all my problems.

The dash clocks are known to cause trouble on this model.
