Mileage higher than advertised

Hi all, purchased a car from an established known car dealer. Mileage advertised was about 80,000km lower than on the clock. But I only found out when coming home. Could be an honest mistake but I bought the car because of the low mileage.

Filed a complaint with SIMI and contacted dealer.

What could be a possible outcome? Do I have a case at all?

I didnt check the mileage when at the dealer, stupid, but still shouldnt be a reason to get stuffed.

Car back to dealer, money back in your pocket, if you have a copy of the original advertisement.

No way should there be any way for the dealer to walk away from that one.

That's 4 years of driving on average.

It's kind of a stupid thing not the check, but it still shouldn't be something you end up taking the hit on.

If you reported it immediately, just bring the car back and demand your money back, before you give them any real reason to say no.

What does the order form say?

Is it possible that it was advertised in miles, do you have the actual figures?

I dont want to give the exact mileage as they might recognise me here but I am positive about the mileage. The car dash actually shows KM and not Miles, and the KM advertised and KM on the car do not match up at all. Not even if I take the Miles advertised as KM. Its just not in any way the same.

Same mileage as on the advertisment, and I signed it, so the purchase form has the incorrect mileage in miles as well.

Weird that the car only shows KM and not miles but that they wrote the miles.

Go back and kick up a fuzz.
They will try the miss-advertisement route and it may not be enough for full refund but try it.
If nothing else they might throw a lot of free washes and services at you.

I have a screenshot of the advert from a general car sales website, the one on their own website has been taken down and wayback machine nor google have a cached copy.

Confused, so the order form shows miles but the ad says KM?

Isint the ad just an invite to purchase. You should have noticed he mileage on an inspection/test drive?

Ad says both, but miles first, and km in brackets

Digital dash, showing day trip not total mileage. Only noticed the mileage when coming home checking out all the stuff in the car. I dont know how to operate a to me unknown car when sitting in one for the first time.

I'd take a partial refund and keep the car

A lot of sellers list in miles as the lower figure looks better, in any case, I'd be going back to the dealer and looking for my money back.

This is about as much as the SIMI will do.

You have the order form, that's more important than the advert which is just an invitation to treat.
Just go back with both and explain that you were mis-sold the car.

What size dealer are we talking here?

Did the car not seem very cheap compared to other similar cars advertised?

One of the bigger ones in Ireland, seemed like a good deal, but not too good to be true. Why would a reputable car dealer scam little people? They sell cars well over €100K.

Seems like a mistake to me, I just want to know what I can do about it.

Thanks. I was thinking it would be understandable for a very large dealer to make this mistake in an ad. Less so for a smaller dealer.

Their response when you go back to them will tell a lot IMO.

    Makes sense.

Will report back here if they do

Might be genuine mistake on dealers behalf, but methinks sneaky sales pery at work

Car returned, full refund. But lost money on insurance, petrol (returned with full tank) and car check up but learned an invaluable lesson

That's a positive outcome getting full refund on car.

I don't think I have ever checked that the milage on the dash matches the advertisement.

If the car looks good and the mechanics are good it's a done deal.

But obviously if the dealer advertised it like that and you spotted it now I think you're entitled to a refund.

To me it sounds like the car was about to be clocked and they didn't have enough time.

Did they try to explain what was going on?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,545 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

As good an outcome as could be expected. To be fair to the dealer.
I wouldn't draw the conclusion that they must have planned to clock the car.
From your POV, OP - you got to live with a particular model of car for a while and can now make the decision to stick with that model or try something completely different.
Best of luck with the search.

Especially when they refunded so easily.

Find it hard to believe that one would not check mileage ,and compare it

To be honest if it was a really underhand operator, they would not have put the lower mileage on the sales docket and they would have fought you very hard re any return of the car.
    Looks like a genuine mistake.

It would be interesting to know what mileage will go up on the ad for the car when they readvertise it

    They did indeed.

The BCM was replaced with a second hand one which had the mileage of the donor car on it.

Not sure what is going on with the car, because when I called them 2 weeks back to see the car they say it was being serviced for the key being out of sync.

When I was buying the car, the salesmen also said that he didnt know anything about the car and asked for the condition of the car, but when trying to negotiate the price down he said they paid xxxx as trade in. Selective memory?

And I noticed their is no service history logbook nor car manual with it. So I wont be tempted to buy it back for less, but it did cross my mind.

I am sure they are legit, but their BS trying to make a sale is typical for any car dealer.

Agree, they are too big to be messing around, they have a good rep and I honestly think they made a mistake
