I was in the pub and this man who is about 65-70 stopped me as I was leaving and said "I've been looking at you all night". He was fairly drunk and for a second I was thinking "oh ffs I'm only 30 odd, is he actually trying to chat me up?".

Anyway he went on and said "it's your smile and your teeth" and then sadly went on to explain how he had lost his teeth in his early 20s in a boxing match and that he has spent most of his life being ashamed of it. I felt really bad for him but it was nice because it is rare that someone can compliment another person on something that they are so insecure about themself. We are actually good pals now. Anytime oh and I are in the local we always have a chat with him

I left a job where I was a team lead and one of the team members gave me a card. She had completely covered it with notes - all the little things I had done for the team over the course of the project that she appreciated.

I hated that job, but I love the card and still have it.

Just before I got married I was at work one day and was out in front of the building having a smoke with my friend. A florist van pulled up and went inside with a huge bouquet of flowers. I said to my friend "I wonder who they are for" and she said she didn't know and we finished our break and went back to work.
Later that day when we finished work our manager called a meeting and walked into our area with my friend and everyone else and gave me the huge bouquet of flowers a bottle of champagne a sexy silky nightie and a wedding card with €200 inside. The card had everyone's name written inside and they'd all written a special message to me too. I had no idea they had planned all that and I thought it was a really lovely thing to do.

Dont mean to be rude about all the nice things others have done. But for sure two of the nicest things anyone has ever done for me were :-

1. I was waiting for my boyfriend (now husband) at Stephens Green and he was late. It was before mobiles so i just had to wait. I was sitting on the ledge at the Benetton window peed off and this random guy walked up, picked a flower out of a bunch he was carrying and said 'here you look like you need cheering up'. I still count it as one of the most random unexpected acts of kindness and pure sweetness anyones ever done for me, for absolutely no reason whatsoever.

2. I was on a nite link on the way home after a nite on the beer. This bloke sat beside me and started chatting to me. I apologised and said...look im bursting to go to the toilet...i need all me energies focused on distracting myself so i cant talk. Nonsense he says and began chatting about silly stuff, getting me to name different things to distract me and it worked. He was so sweet.

I was on holidays in the US and I met a relation over there and her boyfriend. The boyfriend said to me 'you got beautiful eyes'. I said thank you, she is happily married to him many years later.

A few years back, hadthese people over from England looking to see where their ancestors came from.
I was 30 years old, I was asked how was school going. I said I am 30 years old, I finished school many years ago, the person said, 'You look around 15'.

I was six months gone out of a job and about 12 of my ex co-workers turned up to the evening part of my wedding. I hadn't seen them since i left just kept in contact with one or two by phone. They even had a card with a collection that was made for me! You can't beat it when people make an effort just to be nice.

About 6 years ago I was away in Spain for a year in college and having a really crap time of it finding it hard to make friends, feeling isolated, seeing all the pictures of my friends on facebook having great nights out together without me and getting really down.
On my first night out back home that Christmas a couple of my friends said separately, I'm so glad you're back the group never seemed complete without you, you bring all of us together. Really felt the love!

I got a message out of the blue from my friend the other day thanking me for being a good friend, he said "I wouldn't have grown so much as a person if I hadn't met you, you're awesome". That was pretty heart warming. Although he did also saiy "You're already arrogant, so I don't want to inflate your ego too much".

Also, I play a bit of guitar, but basically just at home for my own amusement. We were at a pub one night and the band were trying to get people to come up and join in and my girlfriend dropped me in it and started telling them I could sing and play guitar. So eventually I was coaxed up and played a song and a woman came up to me afterwards and said "That's one of my favourite songs and you did it better than the original". Bull****, but my head still grew ten sizes.

Went out for lunch with my friend, her mam, her auntie and two of her aunties daughters. Her mam and auntie were at the table next to us, and I was on my phone (of course) texting away. My friend and I would be always ripping the piss out of each other and id know her mam quite well but I wouldn't know her auntie or her cousins much at all.

Anyway, apparently the aunt said to the mother that I was very beautiful. I didn't hear this, but my friend decided to say it to me. She said "Lexie you're very beautiful". Now, I didn't realise her aunt had said it first and that my friend was repeating the message, but I flicked my hair, and I was like I know right, aren't I?

Oh god. The mortification when I realised what had happened. The aunt was looking at me half amused half completely taken aback and everyone else laughing.

So that was probably one of the nicest compliments but a) I wasn't listening and b) I ruined it

This wasn't a direct compliment, but it made me feel like a million Euros.

It's a Friday night and myself and a couple of others are in a nightclub. Now, I'm no Brad Pitt - I'm a bit overweight and I just might be the worst dancer in the whole of Dublin. That being said, I'm also not ugly - I'm 6'4 and a zero-f*cks policy on the dancefloor, combined with a bit of height, is quite appealing to the opposite sex when they're p*ssed. Well it was to this girl; a five-foot nothing, slim, black-haired beauty whose big beautiful eyes could melt a Russian snowman.

Anywho, we're dancing, with hands, like a couple from the f*cking 70s. I go to twirl her and nearly break her arm because she doesn't know quite what's happening at this stage - not that she would've felt the pain of a broken arm because she was way drunker than I was. It's getting a lot more intimate now. She's close to me - like, Siamese twin close - and she looks up with those amazing eyes. I try to compliment them. I try to do this about 15 times, because in my mind it sounds romantic as sh*t, but the music is very loud and she doesn't hear it.

This is the part where her friends steal her from my clutches. I wish I could say she resisted, but she didn't give much of a f*ck if I remember correctly. Unperturbed, I take a smoke break, but upon returning to the dancefloor about 10 minutes later, she comes at me again. Now I know for certain that she's interested, which makes me very happy because, as I said, she was ridiculously pretty.

We're eventually back to siamese twin mode, and I go in for a kiss, which seemed appropriate, but she's not having it. I don't actually remember her reaction (because it's hard to see anything when your eyes are covered in tears) but I do remember she wasn't upset or anything. She leans up to my ear and shouts "do you want to go outside?". I'd have gone to Syria with her if she asked.

We don't go outside, but we do go to a quiet, secluded spot by the stairs. I don't remember much of what happened here initially, but I do remember that I eventually apologised for trying to kiss her. She then says: "do you want to kiss me?", at which point I do. It's magical. The ceiling began to shake. Windows shattered out of nowhere. Champagne corks at the bar popped simultaneously. That's the only part of this story which isn't true.

We stay there talking for a few minutes. Turns out she's only 19, which I've been trying to feel guilty about but it's just not happening unfortunately. Anyways, she tells me she still loves her boyfriend, which I suspect is an pre-empted excuse incase I asked to go home with her.

You know my favourite part of the whole incident though? It was not the kiss, nor was it when she was looking up at me like I was a skyscraper to her - it was the eye contact during the dancing. She was literally at arms length at this time, but there was a mutual, unbreakable stare which must have spanned about 30 seconds. It was a truly beautiful, entrancing moment. I've been out of the whole relationship game for a while, but that gorgeous, big-eyed teenage midget has stoked my appetite again.

Without sounding like an utter arsehole, I do get female attention on nights out, but usually it's about them having low self-esteem rather than me being some sort of vagina magnet. I'm absolutely not. I didn't have time to carry out a psych evaluation on her, but there was no way she was lagging in the self esteem stakes and that's why I was hugely flattered.

I realise this is a long-winded way of saying I scored a stunner, but I'm extremely bored. :P

My previous roommate ran down the road in her pyjamas one morning to give me the lunch I had forgotten on the kitchen table. I was on my way to work and hadn't even realized I'd forgotten it! That was awesome.

Another story: My birthday tradition is to have ice cream for breakfast on the day. Last year I happened to be home (in Canada) for my birthday and my mom took my tradition and kicked it up a notch! She made crepes and fruit compote and had three different flavours of ice cream on the table. It was lovely! Best birthday breakfast ever!

At a Christmas party in London in 2002 and at different stages of the night, four of my female colleagues made serious sexual advances on me. Three of them were pretty hot, but I was an attached man and I spurned their advances. When I was about 15 I was home alone and out of nowhere was struck down with a bug. My best friend at the time rang me (even though she only lived a few houses away) to see if I was there before she came over. "Don't come over!! I'm getting sick!!!" She asked who was with me. I told her no one. She said "Then I'm coming over, I don't care if I catch it." I was so grateful!

That same girl lived with me during the college years and one day I had to skip classes and head home due to extreme 'Lady pains'. She knew we didn't even have a hot water bottle at home. So she too skipped some classes (and she was a total swot) and went and bought me a hot water bottle and a big bar of chocolate, then followed me home and gave them to me with a lovely mug of tea.

She was a great friend. She lives in another country now. I should contact her...

When I was in college I got an intership in a company. Now at this point in time I was a fairly typical student with some self esteem issues. I was crap in school and college, often barely scraping 40% in tests, basically because I have tunnel vision, if I like a subject I will pour my heart and soul into it and in school and college its all about cramming stuff which seemed to have no practical value.

Anyway I was pretty sure I was destined to be a failure, as the only reason I had gotten so far in college was because I was stubborn and just repeated tests.

Another side note, I am a huge computing enthusiast and basically have poured all my free time into it.

Anyway, after settling into the intership, one of the guys in the it office, who was effectively my mentor, started to notice I was pretty good at computing and started complimenting me , saying I must have gotten amazing scores in school and I was a genius . That alone did a lot for me, but then he spent the summer giving me practical projects that seriously boosted my confidence. By the end of it I was a much more confident person and a lot happier, all because one guy helped me out even though it wasn't even an offical part of his job.

Im sure a lot people have similar stories, but I think he went above and beyond what a lot of people have done for graduates. I'm forever grateful, because I have a lot of talented friends who couldn't get the same start I did, because of the state of things now.
