What sort of gaming are you talking about here? Web based games (flash based/facebook games) or actual installed games (ie, the Sims etc)?

Gaming, laptop and cheap are not three things that go together.

Gaming, laptop and cheap are not three things that go together.

Not when you're talking about proper gaming, but for a child of 11, you could be talking about the likes of browser based games, which you could get away with on a cheap enough laptop.

Can you find out what games she currently plays or will likely play on the new laptop? And your budget. This will given us an idea of what we can recommend.

Note, it might be possible that something she to play won't run on a laptop in your price range. Be aware of that.

Wouldn't you need a discrete graphics card for FIFA?

You'd want to get an Intel i3 or above, Pentium and Celeron are next to useless, especially for games. If it's Fifa 16, you'd want dedicated graphics. (You might get by on low settings without) I got my laptop, Intel i5, Nvidia 840, 4gb RAM, 1tb Hard Drive for 630 euro given it was a display model. Really you're looking at 600 plus at least for gaming. Have you consider a PS4/XBox One and a cheap laptop/tablet?

I have no idea what a discrete graphics card is
    He already has a PS4

Sorry folks I got the requirements slightly wrong.
He will need it to play Football Manager and use the internet. He plays FIFA on the PS
Would the laptop i mentioned previously be good enough

What kind of laptop is that if you don't mind me asking? I'm looking for a laptop for reasonable gaming for around 700e but could stretch more, does something like yours run reasonably well for games?

Thinking of maybe something like this but I know nothing about laptops lol

It might play it, but it won't be great. If you can spare another 100/200 quid, as mentioned above it'd be far better to get something with an i3 or i5 that would be much better and would protect the investment for the future, as obviously it'll stay a current/usable laptop for longer

I was in Dixons the other day looking for a laptop for a friend, their budget was 500 euro and I found two laptops, one was (HP) intel i3, 8gb ram, intel hd graphics, 2tb disk, other was intel i5, 8gb ram, (Acer) intel hd graphics, 1tb disk.

Dixons do finance as well, so you can pay it over 6 months, which might suit you.

That John Lewis one is junk for gaming, the GT820M is not a gaming card and isn't really much better than Intel integrated graphics....for 1K that is a bad joke. You wouldn't even get the latest games working right at lowest settings.

If your budget is actually 1K look at pcspecialist, or else look at websites like Dabs, Amazon, etc, and shop around.

At that price point you should be looking at a minimum of a GT950M. Example here for €980, it's about 500% faster than that John Lewis one.

I'm in the same boat , I'm looking for a laptop for just playing sims . Is it really that expensive to get a proper one to play the sims ?

Thanks for the reply, I had a look at PC Specialist the other day alright and might go with them! Also the John Lewis one was 499 pounds when I posted :P

    Checking Passmark:
    Minimum CPU is a Core2Duo E4300.
On Passmark, this CPU (released all the way back in 2006) scores 1'051.

Celeron M 585 (the only 2.16Ghz chip I could find) was released in 2008 and scores a measly 603.

Look at the graphics performance and work your way back from that.
