I have natural gas heating, but an electric cooker. I'm thinking of changing to gas cooking. Does anyone know if there is a lot of work involved in doing this, and who does it?

If the house is reasonably new it's quite possible there's a gas pipe there ready to be connected to. If it's a counter top electric hob, (set into worktop with electric oven underneath) then it's very straight forward. If there is no existing gas line there would need to be one brought in at additional cost. Make sure anyone who takes it on is RGI certified, although I doubt there's many people out there foolish enough to go near it that aren't certified.

Hi Mate, I know I am bumping your old thread but I am in the same situation as you were 2 years ago. I bought an apartment that has gas central heating but electric cooker. I want to install the Gas cooker. Can you advise me as you might have done some research: the approx cost involved, is it doable etc? Thanks in advance.

I did it alright. It was surprisingly simple and straightforward. You need a Registered gas Engineer, ie a good plumber, to do it but one that's certified by Bord Gaís. He ran a pipe from the meter round the outside of my house and ran it into the kitchen. Couldn't really tell you how much that cost but the total cost of the plumber which required this plus the moving of some other pipes for the sink, and installing a new sink came to about €500, which I thought was good. I don't know how it would work in an apartment. That said, best thing I ever did.

Thanks for your reply Telecaster58. Really appreciate that.

€500 for this amount of work is quite reasonable. I would definitely try and get some quotes from rgii registered plumbers. I have my gas meter right behind the kitchen wall in store room. I think he might have to do a hole and take out the gas pipe from there. Gas cooker is utmost necessity for Indian style cooking :) lol
