If you had the choice which shifters would you choose, and no I don't want 11 speed, doesn't seem to be much difference in price and I've heard good things about tiagra and mixed about 105.

I haven't used 4700, but I have 5700 and 5800 on two different bikes, and I much prefer the shifting quality of 5800, particularly on the front mech, which I think is largely attributable to the longer arm on same providing greater leverage/requiring less force. From what I've seen of 4700, it seems to have taken this design cue (among many others, including the hood/lever shape) from the 5800/6800 groupsets, so based on that I would probably lean towards 4700 all else being equal.

Of course if you want to put 4700 shifters with older mechs, etc. you may not get the benefits and in fact may have issues if the cable pull ratios are different, since you do mention shifters only.

Having had 5700 and hating the front mech/shifter I'd take Tiagra 4700 over it any day. In fact I'd take 4600 over 5700 as the left shifter action is much smoother and easier with 4600.

If your only changing the shifters to 4700 then most definitely get the 4700 front derailleur too, it's much nicer and smoother than 4600/5700/6700 FD's.

As far as I know if you want to use the new 4700 shifters you'll also need the 4700 cassette for it to work.

Not sure where you're getting that idea from, as the spacing across all Shimano 10 speed cassettes should be the same. You may well need to use the 4700 derailleurs in order to use the shifters, but the cassette should be irrelevant once it's 10 speed SRAM or Shimano.

I have both 4703 and 5700 shifters on different bikes. To be honest I don't notice any great difference in the shifting between either of them with the rear deraileur. The 4703 is slightly better with the front deraileur than the 5700, in that it is quicker, but this may be to do with the shorter shift with the triple. Overall I prefer the feel of the 5700 in my hand but that is just personal preference. Neither have given me any problems as both seem mechanically very reliable.
Having to choose one I'd take the 5700 but not much between them.

thanks for all the info, alot of the replies seem to echo what ive heard about 105 so i'm edging towards the 4700 but that'll have to wait till the new year anyway, here's hoping for a nice discount in the jan sales

following on now that ive shifters in the post does anyone know if it is possible to use 5800 derailleurs with the 4700 shifters, i know the front one will work but cant seem to find any definative answer for the rear one, as the price difference is minimal and could be a form of future proofing.

I'm guessing a 10spd chain may not run smoothly in the 11spd jockey wheels but then again maybe it will. There would be no problem using 4700 shifters as the RD will only move however much pull is applied by the shifters. The RD itself is not indexed and the 11spd and 10spd are more or less the same width wise, so you just need to find out if it'll run a 10spd chain.
