Compatible with Samsung galaxy tab A

    Hi all

I have a Samsung galaxy tab A that allows to add extra storage using a micro sd card. I have a 64GB card and want to add films to it. I have being mainly adding films with .Mp4 and MKV file.

It is completely hit and miss which films work. Some mp4 and MKV films work fine on it while others don't. I have also tried different formats like .asf and .vob

Both these are also hit and miss. One thing I have noticed is all files regardless of extension work fine on an 8GB card I have but same file may not work on 64GB card.

I think issue could be related to the fact that that 8GB card can recognise fat32 file system but 64GB can only recognise exFAT or NTFS.

    Any advice is greatly appreciated

    Regards

    Colm

In terms of video, Android plays webm best.
Of course, webm is just the container, the underlying video file is typically VP9(previously VP8) and the underlying audio OPUS(previously VORBIS). Silicon chips released in the past year or so now decode VP9 rather than leaving it to the GPU to decode it, but the Android software(5.0+) will decode both VP9/OPUS either way.

MP4 containter with underlying video H264/265 and audio mp3/AAC usually plays ok, but not as good as webm.

Try using the VLC player app to play them. Have not come across any files that haven't played using it.

    Hi

    Thank for reply.

The software I am using has an option to convert to webm. It was the only format I had still to try. Would be typical if it work after trying about 12 other options.

    Will keep u posted

    Hi

I have tried the Webm and VLC Player Options on the Tablet. I am still having the Same issue. I would like to try and find a Way to force the SD Cards to recognise Fat32. I have tried this already but could not force it that way. I have also tried a number of different Media Players for Android but they have not done anything. VLC is OK but is hit and miss. Some Files will work fine with it and then other Files with the Same extension may not work at all. Don't know if it is an Android issue or an SD Card Issue

Any more Idea's would be greatly received.

    Regards

Can you confirm if the same movie plays when saved in internal memory?

Is your card formatted as FAT32 or as Ext4, Ext3, Ext 2?

The file extension does not tell you everything - as avi, MP4, MKV, webm are only containers. So, two mp4 containers could have files with completely different visual and audio codecs, as your device may be able to decode some codecs but not all codecs it will only play the ones it can decode.

    Hi

Thanks for the reply. Have not tried any films on the internal storage. Have 3 64GB cards that are formatted as exFAT. Only other option is NTFS. I also have an 8 GB card that has the extra option of FAT32. That seemed to work perfectly but since swapping files is not great.

Do you know a way to confirm the video and audio codecs a file plays as it could be a solution. Don't really know if I can test it until next month as brother is bringing tablet to oz on Friday as he is going for the Christmas and that is why I was filling the cards with films. Probably has enough to keep him going but this thing is still bugging me. I have being using wondershare to change the films to different types if that helps.

    Regards

    Colm.

This is a shame as it would be quite useful, Android plays almost all forms, Windows would be similar, iOS is the most restrictive.

All these formats are patented by Microsoft, as far as I know. Fat32 I believe is the oldest and perhaps the most universal (should play in Android, Windows, Blackberry, though not sure iOS allows access to Windows formatted file structures - they didn't in the past.)
ExFat and NTFS might give problems, would have thought they are only for desktop/laptops.
